    Hi,

I am planning on going back to college as a mature student next year. I want to do a course that is somewhat web based ie web design / web development.

I am struggling to find a college that actually does these courses except Sligo IT which I do not want to go to.

Could you please tell me where I could find out what colleges do these courses.

    Thanks,
    Fergal

    Hi Fergal,

I'm a first year Computing student in DKIT and we do web design as one of our modules. The degree is a general one in first year and then you choose Software Development, Applications and Support or Networking and Support in second year. As I said web design is only one of the modules, the degree covers more than that.

For a web design course the Level 8 in Computing at DKIT might suit you better as it places emphasis on internet applications.

Web design will always be a small part of a general degree

My computing degree does it in 1st and 2nd year

but computing is also a good general degree to do, even if you dont plan to pursue and IT career

You develop lots of problem-solving skills, and business knowledge.

Look at any computer application / multimedia courses.
Very few courses are just web design, its just one class.
There are SO many other things that add to web and are very useful, or essential to becoming a competent designer, such as business, graphic design, programming, writing for the web, analysing your target audiences, flash, animation...

I know IADT has a course in multimedia systems/web engineering

look at the modules of courses, not just the course name.

you might want to try ul in limerick the csis department there has some very good courses .
    here's a link to there website http://www.csis.ul.ie/prospective/

don't be worried about being a mature student here's what they say them self's about the subject
Mature students (in general 23 years of age on the 1st of January of the year of registration) are most welcome to apply for entry to our undergraduate programmes. Each mature student applicant is considered on an individual basis. Academic qualifications, work experience, motivation and overall potential for the programme of study are evaluated usually by means of an interview.

Further details are available from the Mature Student Office. Mature students apply directly to the UL Admissions Office rather than through the Central Applications Office. While there is generally a deadline for applications, for some courses we offer a flexible admissions policy. Please contact the relevant course director.
best of luck with your choice

This actually looks like a pretty good course. Normally I'd have a poor opinion on most Web qualifications but this one looks up-to-date and ticks most boxes. Nevertheless bear in mind that for an empoyer, it's a quality portfolio and ability to learn by yourself which sells better than most pieces of paper.
