Getting information from hard drive

Had a bit of an accident this morning, my laptop fell off my desk and the LCD has now broken so that you can't read anything at all off it. It's a fairly old laptop so I figure I'll just buy a new one as opposed to paying for a new screen.

My question is this, how can I go about recovering some of my work files off the hard drive when I can't see anything on screen?
