My question is this, how can I go about recovering some of my work files off the hard drive when I can't see anything on screen?

Have you tried plugging it into an external monitor? If that doesn't work, you could buy a usb hard drive caddy and simply take out the hard drive and plug it into the caddy.

Is there any cable I can buy to connect the old laptop to the new one and transfer everything that way? because I'll be all week trying to do it with USB sticks and hoping not to have to tear out the hard drive.

see here ,run ethernet rj45 cable from router,to the damaged laptop.And pc2 too ,that makes it simpler.
