Altering a dress too small

I have a dress that a friend gave me, the dress itself fits but the zip which is on the left hand only goes up half way because my frame is a bit bigger. I took it to an alteration shop today but the girl said because of the work that will have to be done on ot and Id have to buy a bit more material for it it will cost €60 to make the dress fit. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do or is there a place anyone can suggest that is really good at making clothes that are slightly too small fit? I really appreciate anyones suggestions :D

Thanks for that, Laois is a bit far out, Im still thinking whether to spend the €60 to get the dress altered or not lol

Very hard to say without looking at it but I've had to alter a few vintage things that are just too good to let go of. The material has been such that it was very very hard to match.

In this case, I'd probably buy a strip of elastic, unstitch the zip from the dress, add in the elastic and stitch the dress to the elastic. If you do a thin enough strip, and it already goes half way up it might give you just enough room. It's also incredibly cheaper and you could do it in 20 minutes.

You could put a lace-up back into it so you can adjust it to fit. I did that with my Debs dress cos the dressmaker made it too small for me.

Pinky99, the question here is... is the bust area far too small, or it is just a tiny bit too small?

At a first suggestion, are there darts in the bosom area of the dress? It might be possible to unpick and resew them to give a little more room. The suggestion of elastic in the zip area is quite smart too, as long as the elastic section isn't too big and visible.
