    RTÉ 1 & 2
    TG4
    RTÉ News Now
RTÉNL 1 (testcard with RnaG audio - placeholder for TV3)
RTÉNL 2 (HD test channel with HD test card or HD video loop)
    + Radio

    Depending on view point:

    1) None at all. It doesn't exist yet

    2) RTE 1, RTE2, TG4 and RTE News Now Loop. + about 11 RTE Radio channels

    3) Various channels, increasing from 31st October to 2012 (see Link)

We have no date yet for TV3, though it has to be by time of Analogue Switch Off, Dec 2012.

We have no time line or Schedule for HD Content. It's certain that RTE2 will have HD content "soon" part time and by 2012/2013 RTE1, TV3 and TG4 should be mostly HD.

We have no finalised Public Launch Date. It's between April 2011 and December 2011
31st October 2010 is a soft or technical launch. Till then you have no assurance of a service.

Is the RTÉ NL 2 broadcast in HD? Currently showing pictures of the coast etc. Swans, etc etc.

Radio includes RTÉ R1, 2FM, Lyric, RnaG, R1 Extra, Pulse, 2XM, Choice, Gold and Junior/Chill

    Yes, 1080i/25.

Yes in HD resolution, but there are a lot of compression artefacts visible, so not top quality. I'm also seeing issues with the playout quality (interlacing line artefacts), but not on every transmission repeat - sometimes these lines are not present.

It's not the real playout system and likely not the real encoder. This is likely a pre-encoded loop, or a test loop to fiddle with stat-mux & encoder settings if it's real encoder in use.

It's nothing to do with real content.

If it is a pre-encoded loop, then why is it different sometimes - sometimes the interlacing artefacts (jaggies) are there, sometimes not. Why would they used something pre-encoded - surely they must be testing encoders from full rate recordings? It's only a month(ish) to some kind of launch. I've said it before - what we need is a technical rep from RTENL to explain exactly what they're at - just like what the BBC techies produce for their HD blogs. Saves all the speculation, conspiracy theories and general crapola!

They even gave up posting basic information on transmitter maintenance/downtimes etc. on their Aertel page 530/169 a year or two ago, not much hope for a blog.

Tv3 had a sting this evening in between ads to say that they were available to 93% of Ireland.

It worries me what the intention of this was.

RTÉ says 85% coverage via terrestrial, should it be 99% + via Sky?
Wonder where 93% comes from, actual satellite coverage?

    which is a dubious statement.
Near 100% via Satellite 99.99% or more
only 80% Terrestial Coverage (Geography or population?)
    Cable.

excluding Pay Tv surely it's too high and including pay Tv too low.

Where do they get that figure from?

It was a quick insert within their adverts at 6.30 this evening, no longer than 5 seconds long.

I know what their min terrestrial coverage figure is. And Sky/UPC DOES NOT count as FTA coverage.

This better not be a proactive face campaign to future intentions/non intentions if you know what I mean.

    93%. hmmmmm

    This from the Oireachtas discussion
    Mr. Conor Hayes: ...
Under the current ATT system, RTE One and RTE Two are available to approximately 98% of the population. TG4 is available to approximately 95% of the population and TV3 to approximately 85%.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

OK, 85% of Population could be MUCH less than 80% Geographic. Anyway.. TV3 can only "get" 93% approx if they suddenly pay to be on the rest of the TG4 "relays". Which would surely be perverse at this late stage.

They should not be allowed % of population figures for ANYTHING.

    Its the same with Broadband.

    should be area covered.

85% of population is probably only 50% coverage.

I other words we won't be on Digital for a while yet and as for Analogue we might be able to do without it. :( Any video of this ad, why should TV3 even feel the need for such an ad?

Are you sure it was 'TV3' and not '3', the mobile operator?

Yeah that makes more sense and I have see those ads. Between XposÉ :o haha

'3' sponsor Exposed, and do claim coverage of 93% by population.

I think it ironic that the sponsor of 'EXPOSED' should claim a coverage of 93%. Surely they should claim 7% lack of coverage!:)

My mistake if that is the case! I heard the audio only!

    Doh!

It is an advertisement claim. Like most claims it is likely to be an exageration, but set in terms that is difficult to prove, or for anyone to care.

    They claim it's Broadband too.

I think they got rid of their star trek soon after it became 3e some left overs from the C6 era alright but not much. They keep changing their mind about Europa League, I am surprise that they don't have it on TV3 since they are the Host Broadcaster for the Final. Jeremy Kyle @ 7pm each night is a bit much.
