How do I get a VRT quote BEFORE I buy a car and bring it into this country?

    The story..............

I telephoned the VRO office today to get a VRT quote on a car I'm looking at in Scotland. The reason I called by phone is the make / model I want is not on the VRTwebsite. The revenue guy couldn't give me a quote because it's not their website..... ok.

I was told to call the NCTS on 1890-927787 to get a quote, as since the 1st September the NCTS now look after this 'service'.

Called this NCT number to get a quote. The NCTS said they can't give me a quote because the make/model is not on the VRT website.

Called the VRO back, same guy answered. He said the NCTS quote the VRT now so he can't help me.... as the Make/Model is not on the VRT website...:confused:

It's bit annoying... but also good I guess for future sales... as all new models released in the future will be VRT free.... as they won't be listed on the VRT website.

The whole thing is a SHAM.

Which leads me to my next question :D

    What car is it ?

I'd rather not say what car. I'll only show up my age and be accused of having below average dimensions. ;)

I got a phone number of the VRO in Rosslare and I keep getting an automated message that "this extension is not being answered. Goodbye. ".

Afaik the NCTS are supposed to contact the VRO head office in Rosslare for a query if the particular car is not on their system. Of course this being typical Ireland and the half arsed transfer of a system from a public service to a private company that was rushed through in the last month or so, it seems neither party actually knows where their role starts and finishes now.

I know someone who imported a Mondeo recently and for some reason the reg was not on their system when he went to the NCT centre. He had to wait until the came back with a query from the VRO in Rosslare before he could get clearance to VRT and register it.

Thanks for that and I agree with you 100%. I brought in a car in 08 and ran with UK plates for over 4 months until Rosslare finally figured out what to charge. I had a cert for customs purposes but it was good to save a heap on road tax for the summer of 08! :)

It just seems now that the revenue have no procedures in place to deal with newer or older models. Surprising ? No.

go over buy your car plonk it out side an NCT centra or VRT centre and tell them to sort it out, They make things that should be straight forward so complex. I bought a Jap import in the UK it was unregistered in the UK well on Jap plates cost the lad selling it £50 to register it in the UK that included new number plates haha, Was cheaper than me getting a jeep and trailer and bringing it home

I don't want to buy the car until I know the value of the VRT as there is one for sale in ireland too. So I want to compare the nett prices etc before taking the plunge. As said above this should be an easy process.... Grrrr:mad:

Rosslare phone number still ringing out... this is not really surprising.

I'm seeing other threads on the fourm here where people can't get a valuation for certain breeds prior to purchasing abroad... anyone here from Revenue explain? As I can't get an answer from calling the local tax offices!!??:mad::mad:

After flip flopping phone call between the VRO and NCTS I got a result... over 9 phone calls later.

Basically spoke to a chap in the VRO who randomly answered the phone and 'seemed to be a professional'. He took details and faxed off my request to their head office in Rosslare. I'll have an answer next week (to be seen)..

Anyone else looking for a VRT quote for a car not on the website drop down menus.. I wish you the very best of luck. There does not seem to be a procedure in place for dealing with these queries. Just keep ringing and you'll get there.

    Cheers,
    CM
