Steering wheel and pedal recommendations

Ok next Friday the 24th see my most anticipated game since I got my PS3 2 years ago being released, F1 2010. So I'm debating whether to buy a steering wheel or not. I've never had a steering wheel for a console before so has anyone used them and what do you think, do they make the game more immersive or are they just a distraction?

This is a list that codemasters released of wheels that will work:
    PlayStation 3:
    DUAL SHOCK 3
    Logitech Driving Force EX/RX
    Logitech Driving Force Pro
    Logitech Driving Force GT
    Logitech G25 Racing Wheel
    Logitech G27 Racing Wheel
    Thrustmaster Run'N'Drive Wireless Rumble Force
    Thrustmaster Dual Trigger Rumble Force

Obviously some are way too expensive and I am working on a reasonably tight budget. Any thoughs would be welcome please and thanks.

If you can afford the g25/ g27 they are definitly the way to go . I have the driving force gt myself . Bought it on eBay about a year ago new for 70 euro . Great wheel at a great price . If you're on a budget I cannot recommend the df gt highly enough .

Ya I was looking at that but it's going pricey new. Was looking at the Driving Force EX and it looks to be a good wheel, and only rotates 200 degrees, like a real F! wheel. Would you use yours much and how do you find it impacts on your driving? Also can you remove the low hanging mounting brackets and place it flat? because I only have space to mount it flat id say?

Hey. I use my wheel everytime I play a driving game on my own (not split screen or whatever) . It makes such a difference to your driving; cars feel so different. Going from a Ford GT to a Lotus Elise is like chalk and cheese. 4wd cars feel extremely planted and you tend to push them that bit extra. RWD Ferrai cars are frisky and the second you push to pedal that bit too far round a corner you feel the back end slipping out. It's extremely satisfying to drive with a force feedback wheel. Just so much more emmersive. You'll also be able to drive more aggresively through corners and the like; feeling out the grip through your fingers. I cannot stress how much of a difference a decent wheel makes.

About the mounting brackets. If you're getting a force feedback wheel you really need to mount it somewhere properly to get the full expeirence IMO. I've tried playing with the wheel just left on my laps and it sucks baad. No real precision is possible and the wheel can just fly around the place when you impact something.

Also about the 200 degree rotation thing. I played in an F1 car in GT5 prologue and never had to turn my wheel around the full 900 degrees. If anything it adjusts to the F1 car. I'm sure codemasters have taken this into account for all those g25s /27s and DF GTs around. They would not use the full 900 degrees of motion for the F1 cars in the game. Would not make any sense at all.

I hope this helps a bit. If you ever intend to buy GT5 too, the 900 degrees of motion and custom button set up will be benificial .

    Hope this helps:)

There was a previous discussion about the G25 here:

    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055727029

Summary - G25 is an excellent if expensive) Wheel, but needs a stable mounting. Which led to this:

I have a driving force gt and I have to say I love it - just is so much better than a joypad and is great if you have somewhere to just leave it in place because it really does take an age to get them set up if you have to get them out from under the bed every time you want to play :p

It's a great wheel for a great price but if you have the cash go for the G27 or G25

I'm going to be picking up the new Formula 1 2010 game for the PS3 and I'm considering buying a steering wheel and set of pedals for it. I heard Fanatec were a good make but I just did a quick search on Amazon and the prices were well over £300 sterling!

Can someone recommend a good quality steering wheel and pedals that doesn't cost the earth?

I may need one with some sort of stand as I'd be most likely sitting on the couch using it. Although I do have a coffee table I could put it on but it wouldn't be directly in front of the screen and at an angle.

    Thanks.

I bought a Logitech Driving Force GT in Argos the other day for 100 quid. Pedals aren't fantastic but do the job. Alternatively, Pixmania have the Logitech G27 for 320 if you're feeling flush.

As for a stand, www.wheelstandpro.com have a stand for the Driving Force GT for 109 including shipping. I'm planning on getting one. They're meant to be good.

After the 3.50 update some controllers don't work, but it's only the unlicensed ones so mostly only small brands. The Logitech ones seem to work fine at least the G27 i tested does.

To be honest it's pricey enough, I bought mine separate (wheel & seat) with about 12 months in between. They have packages on the Playseat site http://playseat.com/shop/promotions/playseat-black-logitech-g27.html

btw The G25 has now been replaced by the G27

I was walking past Argos about half an hour ago and was very tempted to pick up the Logitech Driving Force GT wheel and pedals but decided to hold off for now. It did take quite a bit of will power though :)

That seat and everything looks cool but I already have enough stuff, I don't need that as well, although I would sincerely like it :D

For anyone using a Logitech Drive Force GT, is the gear stick just pushed up and down to change gear or do you actually shift into gears with the proper movement?

It's a sequential shifter so it's just up and down . Still great though as alot of the cars have 6 gears ! The gated shifter won't work in this situation afaik but you can switch it to sequential.
Logitech really have thought of everything!
    GT5 better not get delayed!

it's sequential - and it's not a great one at that - it's the one thing in the wheel that I don't like.. you literally tap it - i dunno what an actual sequential shifter is like but it only moves about a quarter of an inch either way...

you also have 2 buttons on the back of the wheel that work as flappy pedals - i tend to use these most of the time because they're just a lot handier to use i find

Bought a G25 secondhand and I love it, but I need proper seat/cockpit setup. That wheelstand pro doesn't do it for me and seemed expensive for what you get. I can't justify splashing out 300 or 400 euro for a proper seat, so what have those with a steering wheel opted for, when it comes to their setups. Pics if you have them.

I bought the Driving Force GT yesterday in Play for 100 euro. Got it for F1 2010, played 1 game with it and reverted back to the controller. I had it on my lap which is just stupid, then tried attaching it to a table but it kept getting loose. My table has the under bar as well which makes it hard for the pedals. Whats the best way of setting the wheel up? Is it a table, locker?? Pics would be great. Cheers

Im considering buying a wheel myself has anyone any updates on this or the wheel pro stand, looks like the only solution thats in the middle of forking out €100s for a chair set up im thinking of getting the driving force gt wheel and the pro stand, the wheel says it will be £80 in hmv when it comes out so are we looking @ around €110? also as I have never bought a wheel before how do you no what games it works with as I want to know will it also work on the new need for speed as it says the wheels supported on some of their previous titles but not others? just game reviews is it that tells you?

I've a fairly random n slightly off-topic question. Ages ago I saw a guy testing a 360 force feedback racing kit on youtube.

It pretty much was a steering wheel and tv and a large controlled by air jacks which sent him flying around the room to replicate the g's of him racing around the track. Has anyone seen this before? It was probably a year ago when I was researching for a steering wheel.

Sorry managed to find them again after some trawling of youtube.

I have a feeling that Argos have them but just are not selling them until their new catalog comes out after the sale.

It's not the only thing that they don't seem to have in stock anywhere in the country. I was told with a wink to come back when the new catalog is out.
