Fowl Number - what's involved?

I'm hoping to set up a few pens and rear pheasants.

I'd have a ready market with my local gun club.

    I don't have a fowl number.

    What's involved in getting one?

And where would I apply - the District Veterinary Office?

I can't find any info on the Dept. of Agriculture website.

as far as i know, its a game dealers licence you need, but im not sure you need one, im in a gun club and we raise our own birds and havent a licence that im aware of
not to be a complete downer but there isnt much to be made from it, huge costs in pens etc, and keeping birds alive and healty, how many are you thinking of keeping, i take it its next year your planning for

Yes next year .... I'd be happy to work at a loss initially and if I break even I'll be happy.

I hadn't heard of the game dealer's license but I'm 99% sure that a fowl number is required .... consequences of bird flu etc.

I'd be aiming to start with 50.

to be honest its a waste of time starting with 50 birds, most small clubs will release 200+ a year, im sure our club has no fowl licence, as pheasants are game its a game licence you need (im not even sure if its needed), most people that raise small numbers of pheasants are in aclub and do it just for the club and a chance to shoot a few during the season, it will be very hard to make anything from 50 birds. maybe ask on the shooting forum for info on a licence, or failing that ring npws or the nargc

I'll aim for a minimum of 200 in that case.

I have the fround and access to plenty of material to make pens .. just need the netting.

Thanks for the info jap gt .... much appreciated.

Space isn't a problem .... red tape and figuring it out is.

I remember my brougher tried that years ago. You wont make much money on it. He had allot of hassle with Birds picking on one bird and would pick it to death. He didnt make much on it and gave it up after a couple of years.
    Best of luck anyway
