VRT - difficult situation

A relative (really not me) imported a car from the UK right before he experienced some major difficulties in his personal life. The car was only worth a couple of grand but it has now lied around unused/ unregistered for about four years.

The paperwork/ previous owner details are long lost between house moves. Any idea how one would go about assembling the documentation to get it reg'd finally? Are there rules about bills of sales etc. to worry about these days?

He should be able to get an export cert from the DVLA. That will be good enough for VRT purposes. They won't give him a V5.

In another current thread here, poster saw the NCT guy give a blank page to another punter to write his own receipt on the spot! So, do one up in advance to be on the safe side. Of course, I couldn't advise you to date it for last week ;) (especially when the Export Cert you will get from DVLA will probably show the actual export date....).

The export date will be what ever you put it down as on the form.
here is the form you will need

If you put a note in saying you require it ASAP they are usually back within a week or two. Irish system could learn alot from them i reckon
