Hi - I have a few meters of 8 foot fencing at the bottom of the garden. I want to paint it dark green (ivy coloured). Just like you typically see on metal fencing around schools, construction sites etc.

I see eactly what I want everywhere. But the only kind of paint I can source in DIY stores seems to be gloss paint that I guess you would use on garden gates. And it is fairly expensive. Does anyone know of a trade paint I could get? Matt would be best. There is so much of this dark green fencing around that there must be be something you can get cheap for this.

It's this sort of fence ...

    Thanks a lot!

tbh, I'd say hammerite would be the best bet

if its a galvanised fence its not going to be cheap to paint it anyway.its either hammerite or youll have to etch prime it and then undercoat and gloss it.

if its galvanised and no sign of rust you wont need hammerite.

Thanks. There's no rust, it's just got a weathered and mottled look and looks ugly as hell. Think I'll go for undercoat and gloss so.

you will have to etch prime it first or the paint will fall off in a few months.

    sorry read the post wrong.

i thought op was painting for protection. due to the "vaneer" of zinc you will need to treat the zinc so paint will adhere to it.

Wash it first with T Wash then 2 coats of green oxide paint.

Hey... I see this thread is very old but I've to look at 125 linear metres of galvanised fences to paint. A reputable paint shop said to use methylated spirits to wash down followed by oxide paint. This amount of fences would need to be sprayed. But from my bit of online research. ....everyone says you have to prime first. Surely every galvanised farm shed in the country just used the paint. Any advice????Thanks.
