Know you dont...But they can get a search warrent for a television on the basis of an aerial...

Additionally...Hide the radio...If you dont have a TV licence you are required to have a Radio... However the radio is included in the TV

You only need a TV licence if you have equipment containing a TV tuner (television set, VCR, DVD recorder, Sky/UPC box, PC with TV tuner card, etc.). You don't need one if all you have is an aerial.

You don't need a TV licence (or any other type of licence) for a radio.

    thanks very much everyone .

Im just wondering as well I have a tv set that will be in wardrobe unused (genuinely as Ive no interest anymore ) .I have a computer (with no connection to tv stations) . Could they be reasons to fine me or anything if they had a search warrant? Should I give it to my mother for her attic as she has a licence?

You need a licence even if your TV isn't connected to an aerial. See http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/consumer-affairs/media/tv_licences for more info.

So you do have a tv.
You have an aerial on your roof and a tv in your wardrobe and you are wondering if you are excempt from paying for a tv licence.

If you don't have a TV License you are not allowed a TV, a radio, a PS2 or PS3 - for viewing DVD's (also you're not allowed an XBox360, PSP or any computer either console or portable that plays video), no laptop TV, no mobile television and no IPod's or Media players that play video

Are you sure...when did that change. You always needed a radio licence but a tv licence covered it.

    link for that??
i thought it was just any device capable of receiving the television signal (ie tuner). why would you not be allowed to play videos?

EDIT: quote from the link above
You do not require a television licence to watch television on your computer or mobile phone. However, you do require a licence if the computer is used together with any other apparatus to receive a signal.

doesn't say anything about needing a license for your laptop etc

Total rubbish - I wish people would check their facts before posting misinformation.

You only need a licence for equipment capable of receiving TV signals. Check the link I posted earlier.

I've never heard anything about a radio licence. Can't find anything online either. Where do you buy a radio licence?

Edit: You do need a licence for radio broadcasting, but not for reception, as far as I am aware.

The OP said he doesn't have a television, not that he has a TV but it isn't connected to the aerial.

    POST OFFICE.....

Well perhaps you could pop down there tomorrow and tell me how much they cost, since I don't see anything on the AnPost website about it.

Read the whole thread - he/she says they have a TV in the wardrobe.

ya i was looking for an answer not another question ....... and moved in and dont want it. its an appartment - part of a house with an old areal. I would have to go home on a bus with a large old television thats why I thought that a wardrobe could do.

not that i should even bother responding.

even it's unused or broke, you still need to pay a licence fee. recycle or sell it if you don't want it
