    I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else. It's from yesterday's Irishman's Diary. The heroic Boards 1:40 pace team at the Dublin half-marathon get a mention:

    At my lowest point – the Furry Glen, inevitably – I was overtaken by a wave of enthusiasm. It wasn’t mine, unfortunately. It belonged to a large group of runners who appeared to be travelling en masse and psyching themselves up as they went. Then I realised that mid-group were two men bearing balloons and signs saying “one hour 40”.

    These were official pacers: guaranteeing anyone who stayed with them to finish in the advertised time, while also shouting encouragement. There must have been 100 runners with them, like seagulls following a trawler. But I needed to be alone in my pain by then, so I let them go.
