Can anyone tell me if a private individual with no VAT number is able to tax a commercial vehicle for the first time as owner at commercial motor tax rates? The vehicle is not new and was previously taxed as commercial tax.

this is not a smart answer but that'll depend on who you get in the tax office. some will do it no problem and some will ask for VAT numbers. seems to be different in all tax offices ATM

The government are only now enforcing the legislation regarding commercial tax on vehicles, before they really just turned a blind eye, so it seems. i am in the same situation as you are. I've no VAT or tax number so therefore I have to tax it privately. I would say to you to just go to your tax office with your renewal details and see what happens, and be prepared to pay privately. Someone mentioned on another thread that he was told that something was going to be mentioned regarding this issue in the next few weeks! hold out maybe??

i think the UK already sorted this....tax group is PLG for cars and small vans...Private Light Goods.... so Im guessing you cant get commercial tax there for a small van,.
