I've played a few old classics with ScummVM and they run really nicely on Linux. However, I can't figure out either the technical or legal aspects of getting Monkey Island to run on it.
I used to have it on the Amiga way back when so technically I kind of own a licence to it. I don't have the disks any more but even if I did I don't understand how I would get the data files from them to use in Scumm.

I assume there must be some licencing issue with the CMI games or they'd be available directly from the ScummVM site. I also know that it is possible to play CMI with Scumm but can't figure out how.

You owned a license to use the game on the Amiga. Any other platform requires a license for that platform to use it on.

So are there licences avaialble for playing it on linux and if so who sells them?

Not necessarily, no. If the game was ever released formally on Linux, then that's the licensed version.

You should be able to pick up a PC version CD on ebay cheap enough.
