Discussion on 2FM as to the increase of knife crime in Ireland among young teenagers and in some cases claims of kids as young as 12 and 13 habitually carrying knives for self defence as a deterrant!

Just listened to a women who whole heartedly suggested that she would almost encourage her kids to carry a weapon of some form as a means of self defence! (she herself had been the victim of an attack previously) obviously a knee jerk reaction on her behalf but have things come to this? 12 year olds carrying to protect themselves or deter attacks by bullies?

Is it just me, or wtf is going on.:(

I was listening to her, poor lady seems to have a whole lot of issues since she was attacked and beaten years ago. I do feel sorry for her but . . .

She needs professional help to assist her overcoming an event that seems to have scarred her badly.

She seems to have found refuge in carrying a knife and stated she would use it to disbale someone if attacked, not to kill them.

The poor woman seems to have no concept of reality, of the dangers of producing a knife into a fight etc. Of how the greatest of intentions goes out the window when this sorta stuff happens.

She advocated all carrying knives . . .and even reckoned the US model, where in some states people can carry concealed firearms was a good thing.

The poor woman wasn't right it you ask me.

Life in the 21st century has had its effects on most people.

However it's not the knife thats the problem, it's the persons intent. Young people these days are so much more desensatised to violence than they were say ten years ago. It's seen as normal to kick the snot out of someone and post it on youtube or blow the mouth off a dog with a banger and phone record it and text it to the owner. It's yob culture that needs attention, not the knife as an implement. You could cause an edged weapon injury to anyone with any implement with an edge or a point.

From a pure self defence angle, it does highlight the need to be aware of knives and edged weapons nowadays than ever before.

Now for my edged weapon course... :D

Obviously she delusional about thinking that a knife will save her like some magic talisman but giving citizens guns would be a great idea :)

And kids have been carrying knives for quite a while now, it's nothing new. They did when I was a teenager which wasn't today nor yesterday.

How about we just get the Gardai out of the Station house and onto the Streets?

It is sad how bad Ireland has gotten now. I actually felt safer in NY under David Dinkens term as Mayor. And NY was bad during that time frame too.

Bit of a diference in the 2 places though,

New York has a Population of 8.4 million over and area of 790 km2 ( or there or there abouts )

New York has at least 35,000 Police Officers in the NYPD alone . . .in that small area . . . .and there are other Police Forces too. ( about 4000 officers in the NYC Transit Police!)

    Ireland has a Population of 4.4 million over an area of 84,400km2 . . . .

Ireland has 1 police force, with about 13,500 officers max in light of huge retirement figires recently.

So you can see, the level of Police Cover in New York is many many times greater than it is in Ireland.

I realize that Corcioch. The Gardai need to expand big time. The population is growing but the Gardai force is growing to keep up.

It was growing . . . .but since the recession there are no more recruits being hired and the numbers retiring have never been higher. . . .so the force is actually now shrinking.

But like you said earlier, more Gardaí do need to be got out of stations, out from behind desks.

They need to hire more civilians to do that . . .but they wont:rolleyes:
