The car park is not operated by Irish Rail. It is run by a private company.

Maybe so. Same effect, though. Discourage P+R.

Do Irish Rail have no interest in the fact that customers could be discouraged from using the train because of such a crazy parking fee ?

Car park + Train to Docklands return would cost about 6Euro.
The train for M3 Parkway to Docklands costs 6Euro return, (parking free).

You should write to Irish Rail to tell them this.

No one is forced to drive to the Phoenix Park station. People can walk or cycle and not have to pay the parking fee. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Isn't the parking at M3 only free for an introductory period?

So I take it there's as many cycling parking spots and seats for all those who are walking..is there a mass walking phenomenon in northwest Dublin?

What does it matter whether you're forced to or not?

Given there are no paths on the road you can't walk to it and if a person has already paid the 2'30 fare to get that far and that close to town they are not going to get off and pay to get the train the rest of the way in.

It is how ever placed to be accessed by cars and there would be people who'd drive that far and get the train esp if they are connecting to the dart but 4 euro a day is too steep a price on top of the rail tickets.

There is a footpath and cycle track on the opposite side of the N3 (where the houses are), then you use the bridge to get to the station.

It was built to serve those in the Phoenix Park Racecourse development. Unfortunately only one end of that development (the part furthest from the station) was completed, hence it appears to be far away from civilisation.

For those that would drive that far, if they feel that the daily cost is too high, they could drive to Coolmine station. Or they could get a bus that stops at the station. Or they could cycle to the station (plenty of spaces available there, at Castleknock and at Coolmine).

There seems to be a common misconception in Ireland that you should "get a seat" on a commuter train and that park and ride should be free,

There is no reason why parking at a park and ride should be free. There should be a charge in place as it is a convenient service to those who use it.

If you need to drive your car to avail of the train service then you need to park it and you should have to pay this. €4 is considerably cheaper than parking your car in any car park or street in Dublin city centre (if you know of one then the exception proves the rule).

Plus the parking facilities need to be maintained and there's no reason why these car parks can be self fiinancing. There are plenty of stations that have small car parks and some of these should have multistory facilities. Charges may justify the building of these facilities and allow IR to concentrate on providing a train service.

The car park in M3 Parkway is also owned by a private company and is likely to see charges in the future.

Just to add to my previous post. There should be weekly/monthly/annual tickets that combine the parking and the transportation fee so a monthly user could have a lower daily parking fee than a once off user etc.

+1. Paid parking at stations is a fact of life these days, but there should be concessions for those that need to use the facilities daily.
