Syncing folders.

Was away for the last 10 days, so I copied the contents of my external hard to a portable hd. I worked on a ton of the files, updating some and adding some new ones. Now I want to sync the 2 drives so the external in the office has all the changes. I know I could wipe it and restore from the portable, but is there a faster way for me to do this. 3-4 hours to do that.

Looked at a few different programs, but looking for some input.

Chronosync can sync folders. It might help you.

Using terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities) issue the following command:
    rsync -av /Volumes/<portable>/ /Volumes/<external>/

Where <portable> and <external> are the names of the drives as they appear in finder (will be case sensitive). Make sure you include the trailing / in each path.

If you got rid of files on portable that you no longer want on external, include the --delete flag.
    rsync -av --delete /Volumes/<portable>/ /Volumes/<external>/

Will this sync by date created or modified?
    Or just blanket copy?

You could try this (it's free) - http://download.cnet.com/SyncTwoFolders/3000-2242_4-99079.html

(has a wide range of options and can be run in "Simulation Mode" to check results before finalising your selections)

Yeah I find this pretty good.

Another vote for Chronosync. However, it will fail to copy some files from the User folder unless it has "root access" (and I have no idea how to achieve that). So, if it's purely data files, you'll have no problems. If it's system files, you'd be better off using Carbon Copy Cloner.

Its just data files (Photoshop, indesign, illustrator files). No system files

Will give chronosync a look. Thanks for replies.

In that case Chronosync will do the job.

I don't find the interface very intuitive and, when setting timed syncs, I still struggle to distinguish night hours from daylight hours. But it does the job nicely and the technical support is good.

I find Chronosync a bit cumbersome and slow, don't get me wrong its a great app, but is there any other 1 click solution for mirroring the contents a folder?

Just used this to sync the 2, worked perfectly. Simulation mode is great.

I'm glad it suited your needs and worked out. Computer users in 'double-dip recessions' need freebies :)
