Power steering fluid on Ford Focus 1.6 Estate 2000

    Hi,

The power steering of my Ford Focus 2000 Estate was giving signs of malfunction: stiff and making a whishing noise when trying to turn wheels.
I checked the level of fluid and it is very low (below min) so I presume that by just adding some fluid it should correct the problem.

I do not want to drive the car as it seems dangerous and it may affect other components of the hydraulic power steering.
so what type of fluid should I put in? and where can I get it in the city center (Dublin)?

    Thanks
    Thierry

Most petrol stations stock power steering fluid.

If not Halfords / motor factors.

You might want to investigate where the fluid went, it's a closed system so if top up is required generally there is a leak from somewhere. In the interim just get Power Steering fluid or suitable ATF and lash that in up to the max mark. Make sure the wheels are straight ahead when you top it up.

Actually the one in Halfords is not suitable. I got a litre bottle from FORD.

Will check where the leak is.

Well. Did just this the noise and stiffness still there. There is a leak, as I can see red fluid on the road. It is hard to know from where, but I suspect it is from the pump itself, as the fluid falls underneath engine in middle of the car and not beside the wheels.

I probably have to get it towed to a garage. In my opinion it is the pump which is faulty
How much are we talking for replacement? and any tips for cheap towing services?

    Thanks
    Thierry

PSI Pressure switch has been replaced on the pump. That's were the leak was coming from.
    €60.00 for the whole thing.

    Well could have been worse.
