My friend has a problem with his PAYE tax

He earned 237.42 gross last week and has been earning this more or less every week.

His PAYE last week is 93.24.
    Net pay:134.18

He is also claiming 3 days casual social welfare and he just wants to know if these figures sound right to anyone on here

I think you mean he has a 'problem with his paye'.

His paye tax - 93.24 last week seems very high, however it's hard to actually be certain without knowing his personal circumstances, tax credits etc.

Is he single?, married?, wife working? if so what tax credits has the wife taken?

This person could be on emergency tax or week 1 basis, does the payslip note any of this?

He is not married single living at home. He gets the same amount every week and has been working about 2 months now but only getting 45 paye taken out usually.

Sounds like something not right there.

Was he on job seekers allowance this year i.e from 1st Jan 2010 to 2 months ago

He has been on jobseekers allowance since before that date so not in the 100 bracket if that is what you are referring to

Anyone else have any other opinions

How long has he been working?

It's week 9 that emergency tax kicks in with a vengeance, ie 42% on the entire amount. Even without a calculator at hand, E93 sounds remarkably like 42% of E237.

    He need to:
    - makes sure that his employer has his PPS number, AND
    - contact Revenue and tell them where he's working (will need the employer registration no for this), and whether or not he had any other work earlier in the year.
