Business Financial Records - How long should they be kept?

Not sure if this is the right forum, it's related to accountancy and business anyways.

Right well I'm having this problem where an organisation I am part of need to show copies of receipts for flights we booked 3 years ago (booked in July but flew out Sept - Oct). The travel agency won't give us the receipts even though we provided a reference number, the name of the contact person and also the flight number and dates.

They say; "too much time has lapsed" and they don't have the records. I'm just wondering if there is some sort of law that they are required to have these on record or something I can do about it???

    Appreciate the help!

I think they need to keep records for 7 years to satisfy a revenue commissioners requirement.

This could basically boil down to thousands of receipts in boxes in off-site storage. They aren't under any legal obligation to provide you with copies.

The data protection act only applies to personal information stored on a computer. Even if they cannot provide copies of receipts they need to provide you with any information held on their systems relating to you unless they have since deleted it.

You are legally obliged to keep your records for seven years

But they should provide me the information of my booking on their computer system?

Thanks for the help so far!

It looks like the data protection act was updated since i did business studies :D seems to apply to written data too. IIRC it previously only applied to electronic data.
