Hey guys. Just moved into gateway on sunday. My mate was here last year and said that the Internet was savage for games but now they have added a block called sonicwall. Cant play any games, can't go on sites related to games, and more importantly we can't get porn. Anything we can do to bypass it? Would mobile broadband be any good for games? Thanks.

    It's immoral.

This isn't the place to discuss the morality of porn.

OP : I would recommend asking the Gateway staff about it.

Join redbrick and do an SSH tunnel through their servers.

Any redbrick members living there this year? If they're blocking gaming they might be blocking port 22 (SSH) aswell.

Has anyone asked the management company about it? It's possible that the sonicwall is just an attempt to stop certain individuals from eating all the bandwidth themselves with torrents, and some lazy admin put it in Madagascar mode (shut... down.. everything). Online gaming (or browsing websites related to gaming) and things like SSH wouldn't affect bandwidth too much, so it might be just an oversight that they're blocked too.

andrew163 you've hit the nail on the head, but they've already got a thttpd server running, they don't actually need a sonicwall to stop people eating up the bandwidth.I'm going in on monday to lodge a complaint 'cos I just can't take this anymore...we shouldn't be treated like bleedin' children!

RedBrick uses the DCU proxy so he still probably wouldn't be able to do the ould online gaming.

And porn could get redbrick into trouble <.< Do you want that dregin? DO YOU?

    SSH is open AFAIK

DCU's proxy allows gaming in res anyway. Don't see why it wouldn't elsewhere. Also, DCU don't block porn in res, so I highly doubt they're specifically blocking it to RB.

    I said could ;)

    Very important word :P

    DCU don't block anything.

If it won't get you arrested it won't get redbrick in trouble.

    Probably.

It doesn't matter if it's blocked or not. Redbrick can't be used for anything that could be deemed vulgar, offensive etc. due to HEAnet's rules.

    http://www.heanet.ie/about/aup
It is not permitted to use HEAnet services for any activity which purposely:

creates, hosts or transmits (other than for properly supervised and lawful research purposes) any unlawful, libellous, abusive, vulgar, obscene or indecent images, data or other material, or any data capable of being resolved into obscene or indecent images or material

I was looking into getting one of them mobile broadband things but I heard mixed things about them. They lads in gateway did say they were looking into removing the restrictions from 11pm-6am.
But that is fair late, they said it was because last year people gaming used up so bandwidth.

    So dirt like.

Mobile broadband is piss, to put it nicely. Unless you're at the top floor of block A with a view of every cell tower in the city, it probably isn't worth it.

When I lived there (this was under the old management company), the moving out letter we got implied that we may have been allowed to get NTL (now UPC) broadband in, independently of the management company. This was the first hint we'd heard of this all year, but if you really want to be able to game, might be worth looking in to.

The other option is to find someone living on gateway who knows lots about computers and Linux/Unix servers, and ask if they've ever looked into a VPN to a dedicated server/external VM. A few of ye might be able to get together to pay for an endpoint. I'll say no more on that.

If gaming is causing problems for them, they probably don't have a big enough connection in the complex. Really, gaming? God forbid if people ever wanted to use HTTP, the network might catch fire or melt under the strain. It was 10 meg or something when I was there, which was taking the piss really. I heard that they'd upped it with the new management company, they really need something along the lines of 100 megabits for that many apartments nowadays though.

It seems to be blocking sites almost randomly. It's blocking me from doing research on a project or two, thanks to the arbitrary blocking rules.

It's letting me back up to my server at the speed of light though!
