Ch 62 the Dungarvan relay has been off the air since 1500 hrs. I wonder what's going on? I've only just had my aerial repostioned. I retuned to Carrick on Suir on Ch 52 getting a good signal and quality.

It would appear they have moved the Dungarvan relay to Ch 55 as I'm getting Irish DTT there loud and clear.

Ch 55 is allocated as the PSB mux at Dungarvan. Ch 62 was allocated as one of the commercial muxes.

UHF channels 61-69 are to be cleared of tv and replanned for mobile services, the process is called the Digital Dividend.

So why did RTENL bother transmitting on Ch 62 in the first place!!?

    A question for RTÉNL.

It WAS on 55 before but it was degrading the co-channel analog RTE picture from Crosshaven on 55 for a portion of its viewers (Rippy has posted about this in the past) so they moved it to 62 (which would be the never activated TV3 channel for Crosshaven BTW)

So I assume a retune will pick it up again? I don't have to move my aerial or the like. Not at home to try at the moment!!!

No aerial move needed. However the signal strenght and quality don't seem as strong. In facted I retuned to Carrick-on-Suir on 52. I'm getting a better signal and quality at present.

OK but on the subject of signal quality, are digital signals there or not there? Should quality not be consistant once you have a link established? Variations in quality I thought only apply to analog?

    no.
there is FEC. Overhead in the signal to correct data messed up (Forward Error Correction).
If all errors can't be corrected the picture increasingly pixelates (coarser), then if worse "breaks up" and at worst before complete failure, intermittently freezes.

Only Quality (the measure of errors & noise) is really significant an amplifier can increase signal and always slightly reduces "quality" (adds small amount of noise and distortion). That's why amplifiers don't compensate for poor signal (bigger aerial does that) but for signal loss in cables or splitters.
