I got an O2 3Gs from my son in the UK last year.

Got it jailbroken with great difficulty. (I'm a plonker)

    I have an early O/S. 3.0.1 I think.

Lately, I've been unable to download certain Apps because they require the newer O/S. What can I do??

I think that Cydia saved my data (if that means anything?)

You should be entitled to get it officially unlocked by O2 UK.

Got my son to call into O2 in London. Gave them the EMII no. They say that they can't locate a signal for the phone & say that it must be because it's jailbroken.

If I let iTunes update the software will I lose my jailbreak??

That's rubbish. It has nothing to do with being jailbroken. It's probably because you're not using it on o2 uk. I was in the same situation with my 3GS, if you get an o2 uk sim for it and activate it with it that should sort it out

EDIT: Forgot to mention that wou will probably have to pay the £15 to unlock it
