I last worked in Ireland in may 2008, and got a p45 from my employer. I was travelling for a couple of years and on the dole when I got back.

I now have a job starting monday and my employer wants a p45. Is the one I got in my last employment still valid? Or do I need a new one after being on the dole?

A p45 is only valid if it's from the current year (2010) so your one from 2008 is not valid.

Just ask your new employer to fill out a form 12A and it should be sorted fairly soon.

Thanks for that info! Easier than getting through to the revenue!

Got through to them in the end, I've to get my new employers PAYE number and they'll issue them with a cert or something.

That form 12 is for people who have never worked in the country before.

Form 12A is for people who have not been in paye employment for the current tax year and no P45 i.e no paye employment since 1st Jan 2010 to date, to ensure they get their full credits.

The revenue will send your tax free allowance certificate to your new employer when you notify the payroll dept or whoever does the wages that you have commenced employment of your tax credits

Hope the job works out well for you

    Best of luck

Form P46 (notification of a new employee without a P45) will do the job, less long winded than the 12a procedure, and can be done thru ROS by the employer. 12A would only be necessary if the person hadn't previously been in employment in the country.
