Hi I have a friend who has a 07 Mk5 Golf 1.4 petrol version with 93k km on it.

She says theres a bad noise coming from the gearbox and it gets really bad when she puts it into 5th. S he's brought the car to a garage and she's been told that the gearbox needs to be replaced which is a bit of a shock as theres not massive mileage on it. The car is outside of warrenty but VW have agreed to pay a percentage of the parts cost.

Is this a common problem with the golfs and is she entitled to any more money from VW. Anyone else been in a similar situation and how was it resolved.

She isn't entitled to anything from VW as the car is out of warranty. She can argue with them to try get more money, but i'm suprised they are giving her any at all

It's too common a problem on VW's and related cars. 1.4 and 1.6's especially. Are VW contributing much? Mine started whining at 78k km

We had a fleet of 7 Golf 1.4's with a customer in 07. Only 3 of them made it up to anywhere near the mileage of your friends, and only 1 had gearbox problems.

Driver was having trouble getting 1st, 2nd or reverse, but unfortunately that's all the information our system has. No cost against it so must have been warranty, but it was within a year of registration - no mileage noted either.

Based on the rest of the history of that car, I'd say the driver wasn't the most gentle with it anyway.

I think its in the region of 40% parts but I'm not to sure. I get your point about warrenty but if its a fault caused by bad parts/design VW should be liable. Just wondering what peoples experiences are.

She has got a price for getting the gearbox recommisioned which is about a third of the price even taking into account VW payin part of the price. Is this a good option to go with?

That's the option I went with. Should be as good as new afterwards. Also budget for a clutch while the box is out. There's a bit of labour involved removing it and it would be madness not to do the clutch if it was a bit worn while the box is out. Should add about €200 to the bill. May not be required but if it's 50:50...

Don't drive around too long on it though - was shown a gearbox casing after a box finally went pop. Couldn't be repaired and one mightly impressive hole in the side of it.
