Hi all, I'm wondering if any DCU alumni could share their experience about what they did after graduating. I am currently going to start 2nd year Genetics and Cell Biology, and I want to find out what past students have done.

Is it worth it to attempt a masters or a PhD in a selected field? What are the pros, and cons - and importantly, is it easy to find employment and what are you working as?

    Thanks.

I've got my masters. Finished just there. Sitting on the dole. Living the dream. There are jobs out there. But so many of them require a European language these days which makes it harder. None of my science mates have jobs. Well, one works in the zoo.

You're worrying about the completely wrong things, only going into second year.

Hi thanks for the reply, I've got a fluent 2nd language!

And I know I'm a tad bit worried, but I started thinking of this prior to writing this thread because as you say; you're living the dream, I want to start thinking of what I want to do quite early on. From my experience, it always helps to be informed and knowledgeable of what my opportunities are. What could you be doing in terms of work? Everyone says "OHHH YEAH I'M GOING TO BE A SCIENTIST" but in reality, I thought exactly of your current situation. If you exclude the 2nd language from the equation, what could you be doing?

Anything from the computer repair counter in PC World to social media account management. Between my degree and my Masters, there's loads of different things I could do. Have a look on jobs.ie or something and see what kinds of variations of jobs are out there. Three different jobs could be offered by three different companies, but they could all have the same title.
