My brother is 13 and just started 2nd year. He's permanently getting into trouble with my parents/teachers because he's not doing his homework properly (skipping hard stuff instead of trying it/messy/rushing it) and he just sits there ?looking at the book instead of studying. Theres constant fights over it and its annoying me (I'm in 5th year, don't need the stress). How do I help him learn how to do stuff properly?

Is it a case of he doesn't understand/afraid of failure or just doesn't care for homework/study (or school in general)?

Its a combination of laziness (he can do the work he just wants to get it done as fast as possible so he can get back to xbox) and he's a bit immature I think. He can do it he's just not putting the work in.

Well beyond punishing him, there isn't much you can do I'm afraid.
See I'd say take the computer away from him and YOU have to give it back. Basically it would work with your parents taking it away from him and then when he's done his homework or whatnot, you say "okay, he's done it, give it back". The reason for this is let's face it... parents will give in to "the ickle angel". While technically only you would be there to make sure he did all the homework (you wouldn't have to make sure it's right or even A+ work, just that it's been done with effort).

The only problem I can see and it is a very, very big one. At 14 kids tend to be influenced a lot and the last thing you want is him going off with the wrong sort of crowd or something.

You do feel strongly, I say have a sit down with your parents and ask if they'd have a talk with the teacher(s) with you there; you can offer a perspective as the older sibling, as well as showing you actually give a damn.

My brother was just as bad in 6th class and in 1st year, I scared it into him, I tried to tell him that, He would end up as failure if he didn't do his homework to the best of his ability and I was persistent in telling him this, everytime he wanted to rush or skip a piece of homework, I'd just remind him. It worked, Hes doing great now, In second year :D

Yes but not everyone is a psychopathic mad man who abuses their siblings. :D

On a more serious note, it could work. But you've got to understand more often than not, "action" type things like could drive the kid himself to do something explosive and end up "rebelling" in a way or two.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you all! Thanks for the advice. I'm going to teach him how to do brainstorms and study over the weekend, and explain why its so important he studies. Yeah I'm not so much worried he'll fall into the wrong crowd as much he'll turn into an idiot rugby player like the boy down the road :/
