Why not say it's a medical reason but give a different medical reason if you're too embarrassed to say the real medical reason?

or that your saving for something. Like a savings drive for a house or something.

You don't need an excuse. If you feel you must give them a reason tell them you are turning over a new leaf and don't want to drink for a while.

I drink every weekend so i was thinking of some medical condition maybe i could come up with, anyone any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,673 ✭✭✭Miss Fluff

There are lots of antibiotics/courses of treatement that you can't drink on. If your doctor has recommended that you go off booze, ask them to suggest a reason you can use and they will find one for you easy enough.

I think to say you are training for something specific is quite a good one.

I hope you're not thinking of going out every weekend to sit and not drink while your mates probe you to find out why? If the medical condition allows, it might actually be worth taking up some healthy activity to do in the meantime and avoid any uncomfortable situations.

Say you are allergic to yeast

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Acoshla

Severe kidney infection, antibiotics for said kidney infection, followed by recurring kidney infections, yeast infection from all the antibiotics, off alcohol and sugar due to infections, this was my actual story for months last year and if anyone asked once, after they heard the words severe kidney infection they didn't ask again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,024 ✭✭✭Redpunto

yep, just say antibiotics, i was on ones ages ago for an infection i got after getting my wisdom teeth out and it came with HUGE warnings not to drink.

Tell them that you've developed an allergy and the anti-histamines you're on make you really drowsey if you drink, and that you're sick of hangovers so you're gonna lay off the booze for a while.

There are several marathons in Ireland every year

    You are training for one

As a poster said, say your allergic to yeast. Say its ****1n up your stomach, your gettin cramps and stomach pains etc etc. Thats an excuse to stay off the drink for 3 months at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭Uriel.

Say you have been suffering from undiagnosed pain in your side for the past while and you have to get some tests done. In the mean time, the doctors have asked you not to drink until they get to the bottom of it. Just in case there is a kidney or liver problem

And you know Ireland you might have to wait 2 or 3 or more months for an appointment with a consultant etc...

"Have to knock the booze on the head for a while to get rid of this beer belly" - if you have one.

    "Antibiotics."

    "Stomach problems."

    "Training for a marathon."

I used antibiotics as an excuse for about 3 months years ago when I didn't really feel like divulging the real reason I was off drink to my friends. Nobody questioned it.

Just do what everyone else said - training for something, on antibiotics, trying to get fit, etc. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Just say you're off the drink for medical reasons. If they are your real mates, they won't question it. If they are tossers, they will make a big deal of it and well, you know they ain't real friends then.

Go with the severe kidney infection, imo it's the most straightforward. Anyone can get one, drinking while you have one would be extremely painful. Nobody will wonder why you didn't do that marathon you were training for. Whenever you can and want to drink again it's believable that the infection has cleared up, whereas an allergy to yeast would be ongoing. As well as that kidney infections can be recurring so if you have to quit again in the future it's easy to say it came back.

And lastly, it's a bit crude, but with the kidney infection story if anyone presses for more details or tries to convince you to have a drink anyway you just need to mention how you were painfully pissing lumpy blood and they will STFU and accept your decision not to drink.:)

Migraine. Alcohol is a migraine trigger for many people, so you can simply say that you're currently trying to isolate foods/situations/environments that trigger an attack.

I would suggest you dont use any excuse that would make them ask further questions like your having tests done and cant drink etc.
I agree the training for something is good but will you actually train and if you dont will they notice.

My own suggestion, say that your giving your body a break as it needs a time out for a while. Say your immune system is shot so your taking a breather from the alcohol. You'l be back on the horse in no time!

Financial reasons. Drink is not cheap these days. Say your saving up for christmas or for a new car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭cheekyass

Plenty of people seem to go off drink for the month of November......what about just saying that your doing it to prove to yourself that you can have a good night out without drinking.....or drive everywhere maybe....can't drink if your driving?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭estar

you dont need an excuse. why would it make any difference? if your friends need you to drink maybe you need to give them a miss for a while?

drink is a big waste of time anyway, every weekend. grand once in a while for a special occasion, but regularly and it makes you fat, broke and low in energy.

maybe you will start a trend amoung your friends.

    dare to be different!

Why do you need an excuse ?

Just say you've chosen not to.

Drink isn't the be-all and end-all, and if any of your mates think that it is, then it's their problem, not yours.

Pretty sorry state of affairs when we have to make up excuses for not drinking. And i presume drinking is synonymous with givin it a proper lash rather than having a beer or two.

Dont make any excuses. Say you're givin it a break. End off.

My sympathies are with you, OP.

I was at a party last summer, and I was not drinking alcohol because I was pregnant, but it was early on so we weren't telling people yet. I was at a family gathering and I had some silly relative in my face saying "ah go on" asking me what I'm drinking, and I'm there trying not to drink.

I love going to places where if I don't drink, (I get drunk really easily) no one asks any questions.

I agree, it's a poor state of affairs when you have to come up with an exvcuse not to drink and even when you have an excuse, people still try and force alcohol on you! It's worse when you're a woman, if you don't drink on a night out, people assume you're pregnant

I would be slow to make up an excuse to do with illness or training, if they are good friends, they will notice that it's not true and that might increase their curiousity about the real reason.

It's almost exactly 3 months til Christmas, just say you are off the sauce til Christmas for financial/health reasons. The less complicated the lie the better IMO.
