Reg cert - need to tax car

I bought a used car a few weeks ago privately. I am connected through business to the seller so foul play is not an issue. There was a week’s delay in sending off the reg cert., according to the previous owner’s father, who I bought the car from.

I went to motortax.ie and entered my reg and got the message “No Changes notified in the last 3 months”. I rang the dept of Transport and got the automated system. The message said they were “processing” certs from the week of the 25th of August, if memory serves. There was no option to speak to someone. My question is whether the cert would have been logged as being received? Does “No Changes notified in the last 3 months” mean the seller hasn’t sent it?

I need to tax the bloody thing because it’s out since June and I’ve had it for three weeks now but I don’t want to pester the seller in case it’s about to drop through the door.

    Seen here http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/motoring-1/motor-tax-and-insurance/motor_tax_rates

"Change of vehicle ownership and motor tax
If you sell your vehicle or trade it in for a new model in Ireland, you must register the change of ownership. This is done in one of two ways and depends on whether the vehicle was first registered before or after 1 January 1993. You cannot tax your vehicle until the registration of the change of ownership has gone through. It is an offence to drive without paying motor tax, ...so you should not drive until you have received confirmation that the registration has occurred and you have paid the motor tax.... Read more in our document on change of vehicle ownership".

    Guess I'll just get taxis...

Yes. Be greatful to Irish Government for this wise regulations.
You bought the car, but you are not legally allowed to drive it and you can't do anything about it. There isn't any time limit stated in the law for Dep. of Transport to issue you with reg. cert. So you could be waiting for month if you are unlucky.

Ring and ask did they send it yet, if not you can get it from them and take it to the tax office tax the car and they will do the change of ownership then. alternativly you could just fill in the details of the previous owner on the rf100A form(tax renewal) and your insurance details in the relivent section and do it that way. they wont ask any questions but just check motortax.ie before you go to make sure a change has not been logged yet!

I bought a car on September 1st and received the VRC within 2 weeks. The RF100A form specifically says its not for use if a change of ownership so i cant see what anyone can do in this case.

So, it was sent off a couple of weeks ago? (few -1 = couple)

    That's 4 weeks ago.

    Couple /= 4

    Am I missing something?

In the past, I've had reason to call and enquire about reg certs. On a couple of occasions, I was told that it was logged as being received but had not been processed yet. Now I can't speak to someone to find this out.

The last conversation the seller and I had was that he was going to post it that day. I don't want to ring the seller again without knowing for sure if it has or hasn't been sent by him. If he hasn't, I might have to get taxis for four more weeks. So there you see.

My point was: If they were processing stuff from the week of 25th August, they wouldn't even have received the form for your car by then, so obviously it's going to say “No Changes notified in the last 3 months”.
