Any recommendations on a nice vintage turn to open razor. I've been looking at some of the old Gillettes like the super speed and the bostonian's...they look might fine!

What are you currently using, if an adjustable on what setting?

It'll help understand whether it's a mild or aggressive razor you're looking for. I find the standard Superspeeds too mild.

The older Gillette open comb razors are three piece but worth well considering.

Keep an eye on the For Sale sections of the usual international fora as well as safetyrazors.co.uk

The go to vintage razor is the Gillette Fatboy - that's my everyday razor. Others worth considering are the Superspeed and the various Flare Tip models. Here's a picture of a few of mine:

What's the one on the far left?
It looks quite nice. Any close-up pic?

PM received, best of luck with the auction. The Gillette Red Tip is still available, if anybody else is interested in a Gillette Red Tip then first person to post gets it.

That looks like a Gillette slim handle adjustable.

Cheers! It looks nice and has gotten some great reviews. I might see if I can pick one up. I'd like a nice older adjustable to go with my Merkur HD. It's nice to have a bit of choice. :)

Cheers for the recommendation on the fatboy Mediatank.
One is on transit to me as we speak. :D

Missed the slim by a couple of dollars. I think I'll have a look round at B&B for a razor. By the looks of it I'd probably get a better deal there too.

Can I just say, DonJose is a true gentleman, got the Red Tip today with some extra blades thrown in :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,470 ✭✭✭DonJose

You're welcome, I hope the box wasn't smashed up, I wouldn't use the blades in the box as I don't know how old they are they came with the razor :D It's a great razor and gets great reviews on B&B, enjoy.

A couple a bits were knocked off the box, but no harm! Nice feel to the TTO function, nice little thing.
The progress I have seems huge now :pac:

Aye, the Gillette blades look suspect, but it's a nice dispenser & cheers for the Bluebirds ;)

Took the red tip for a run this evening. Very nice shave, smooth and so much easier to manoeuvre.

The only other DE razor I have used is the long handled Progress, and a direct comparison is that the Progress seems like more work.

    TTO FTW :pac:

I can confirm the fatboy razor is quality! Lovin' it!:D

Some very nice stock, I never took any notice of which one I use :o, I must check it and see. The red tip looks good.

There was a beautiful old shop on Georges Street in Waterford, sold pipes, blended their own tobaccos, sold knives, razors and blades and you could get a shave in the barbers in the back. It's closed a long while now though.
