With the country in such a political and economic mess , surely it is time for Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to unite, there policies are practically the same , they both have unstable leadership, and an equal amount of the old back slapping cute hoor politicians - rid the party of these , and get a few of the good guys to merge and try and lead the country out of the mess . The differences between both parties is based on a 100 year old dispute that is over , but no we will get Fine Gael and Labour who both have different outlook, certainly economically . We dont need 3 large parties in Ireland

We don't need any of those 3 to be honest.

No, I prefer to have "choice". Like when I go to the shopping centre I can check out Dixons and, PC World and Currys to see which has the best prices.

woops - sounds a bit 1984 - i meant one central party , and Labour as the alternative - similar to US and UK party system - one central/right wing party and one left wing (or supposedly)

Ah sure, lets do away with the opposition altogether.

Dictatorship, that's the way to go!

Like when I go to the shopping centre I can check out Dixons and, PC World and Currys to see which has the best prices.

An ironic simile considering all three brands are owned by one company...

Had a little think about this...

Would that not make it a dictatorship, as oppossed to a government?

Well, if it saves me having to get out of bed to vote every time there's an election, then I'm all for it.

how so ?? the people would have a choice between - Fianna Fail/Fine Gael and labour.
The smaller parties would also still be there ??

What is the difference now between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, maybe Fine Gael are slightly less corrupt - but there economic thinking is very similar

the bikkering between the 2 parties is just comical in this day and age, when they both stand pretty much for the same old values

But what you are basically saying is that there would be one main party.
So we would basically have one party, with one set of policies, one gosheen leader that the others would support, because they don't want to go against him/her.

It just wouldn't work. One party would have a complete monopoly on the country, pretty much forever.
That sounds quite like a dictatorship.
They wouldn't need the independents or smaller parties as they would already have more than a majority.

Wasting a lot of time going to the last two separately boss!

Parties are pointless, I don't like voting for people that have already written down a predetermined way of dealing with the world. They're inflexible and incapable of tackling problems on a rational level. Instead they try to blanket the problem with their own politics and dogma.

While having one party would reduce political conflicts it would really just reduce you to one of their outdated ideals giving you less options for dealing with real world problems.

Really a community should be able to hand their problems over to engineers who would come up with solutions to overcome the problem. Politics shouldn't come into it.
