Had this waiting to install when i turn my PS3 on, i thought this was just going to be support for 3D Blu-ray but it has a welcome extra.

Main features in system software update version 3.50
    • Blu-ray 3D disc playback.
The PS3 system can now play 3D content on Blu-ray 3D discs.

    Note:
    • A 3D compatible television that complies with the 3D standard and a high-speed HDMI cable are required to watch 3D content.
    • Depending on the content, some elements may be displayed differently in 3D on the PS3 system than on other playback devices.

Other new or revised features in version 3.50

    Friends
    • You can now submit grief reports if you receive unwelcome or harassing messages.

    Other
    • You can now access public information on Facebook from Facebook-supported games.

Meh, I've no 3d tv & I despise social networking. No incentive to update whatsoever.

You won't be able to play online without it is kind of a big incentive to update, i was more interested in the implementation of a grief reporting system somewhere else other than the Playstation site.

Is it? I don't use PSN. There's nothing of interest in this for me, as with the last few updates. The PS3 can already do 3d games from a previous update, that's all that may interest me should I acquire a 3d tv in the future.

Has there been any Facebook-supported games yet?

I'd love to know what they exactly do. Is it just a status update like "Paddy has completed Mission 1 in blah blah".

What's next? A twitter application that alerts your tweeting friends that you've powered up the console, your joypad battery is at 60%, and there's no disc in your drive? Christ almighty, whatever happened to just playing a game on your console :P

Has anyone whose updated their system had any problems with their disc drive??

Strangely enough, since I've updated the system, my machine won't take any discs in!!

It was fine earlier, and now I can't put any discs in!! Could the update really have any effect on the drive?

Ouch that sounds nasty, unlucky Super Drogs.
    What model/version is it?

Thanks for the info Varik ! Will be updating later with Playstation Plus :D

Is it just me, or does it seem to be a common occurance, that when a new firmware is installed, it f*cks up the BD drive for an unfortunate few?

Excluding that HDD problem, i think it's just a coincidence as at any time someone has a PS3 beak and there a chance it happens when they update.

    An update to my problem:

I left the machine alone for about 3 hours and when I came back to it it took the disc in, BUT The machine wouldn't recognise that the disc was in it! No sign of it on the XMB bar. I also tried different games and DVD's but none of them showed up on the system.

Then I just went down to it a few mins ago to try again, and I'm back to square one, the machine won't take the discs in!!!

Am I really the only one on these boards with this problem??

Could the maintenance on the PS Network be connected? Because when my machine started taking the discs in, the PS Network had come back. (But not to full working order)!

Sounds like Sony have decided to remove the Blu-ray drive functionality to prevent people making backups :pac:

Am I really the only one on these boards with this problem??

when i tried the update it stopped download at 60=70%, then gave me an error message(which i googled)
ruens out i needed to either back up all data in order to complete new update or plug it ps3 out at the mains for ten mins and that could change a few setting and try the update again.

thankfully plugging it out worked fine and its now fully working again.

when i googled the problem/error message i came accross alot of post with people stating their displease with irregularities with psn updates in the past.

seems every update effects a few.

:D If Sony carry on removing features they way they are, a new PS3 will mean the just plastic casing with no electronics before long :pac:

It's an ongoing issue with PS3 f/w updates. Varik is right in that a high proportion of the failures are conincidental, but there are also a lot of genuine cases where the update has glitched/stalled causing BD drive problems and in some cases has bricked the unit. I've witnessed first hand a perfect BD drive failing after an update.

I updated 2 nights ago. Initially none neither my remote not joypad worked. Now the remote works and only half of the joypad works, as in the buttons on the right / PS buttons don't respond.
I read on some PS forums that various controller issues have arisen

They did the same last year also, disabling fake clone DS3 from eBay and DealExtreme.
They are well within there rights to do so as these are unlicensed devices without guaranteed compatibility.

the following big name controllers no longer work.

    Mad Catz
    - The 2008 Wireless PS3 GamePad (Only the one released prior to 2008, current version in stores works fine)
    - The 2008 Wired PS3 GamePad (Only the one released prior to 2008, current version in stores works fine)
    - The PS3 Wireless MicroCon (Now discontinued)

New Mad Catz peripherals, be they controllers, Street Fighter IV sticks or Rock Band instruments, should work fine with the PS3 as they are fully licensed and up to date, Verrey said. you are urged to contact and report any concerns to contact Mad Catz customer service, who will try to help.

I stand corrected. It is ****ty of Sony to do, but you can understand why. It's up to the developers of the replica controllers to up their game, there shouldn't be a distinguishable difference between the two when plugged into the PS!

Sony's next step is to probably sue those that are continuing to develop unlicensed devices.

Hey, does anybody know if I can re-update the system with the same update? My playstation is still screwed after the update 3.50 (details on page 1 and 2 of this thread).

I think my system only downloaded and installed HALF the update! I remember looking at it downloading slowly enough until it reached around 50-55%. Then it just said 100%! The same with the installing part.

Does anyone recommend downloading it again on the PC and trying again? Would the machine even let me do it, or tell me I've already got it? I don't want to do it without advice first.

    Hi l'prof.
The machine won't take the discs in. It did the odd time if I kept coming back to it every few hours and trying. But then the odd time the disc went in, the machine showed no sign of it on the XMB bar.
But just once last week, it recognised it and I was able to play it without any problems.
But I took it out the next day to see if the problem was gone, but I was back to square one then, the machine won't take any discs in!

    Taken from here :
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-General/Recovery-Console/m-p/40073443
If you can, I suggest you back up your PS3 first. The menu that you will access to can fully erase your PS3 if you choose the wrong option! I do not take any responsibility! Please proceed at your own risk! If you read and follow the instructions exactly you should not loose any data!

The current version of the ps3 firmware has a “recovery console”.
    You access it by

    1. Start with having the system in standby (redlight is on)

    2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.

    3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)

    4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button

You will now have a screen with these options

    1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
    2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
    4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
    5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
    6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION HERE OR YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA. The one that fixed my blu-ray drive is option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

I REPEAT CHOOSE RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

After this, it is going to restart and bring up a screen reading something like “you have Corrupted System Data. Your PS will now replace this data” Then you choose continue and that should be it.

This option reinstalls the system files and drivers inside the PS3 with the original ones that are stored on your hard drive. In this case, it replaced a corrupted driver for the blu ray drive thus fixing my issue and hopefully yours!! This option will only replace all system files thus saving you from loosing any data that’s stored on your hard drive. Again this option does nothing to your hard drive it reads a file from the drive and rewrites it to the PS3 system.

If you want a more technical understanding of what this is really doing continue reading. DO NOT NEED TO READ THIS TO COMPLETE REPAIR. The PS3 does not boot from your hard drive as a computer does. It has a flash memory like a cell phone that stores all system files and system firmware updates that you get when the PS3 updates. This is why reformatting your hard drive will not fix your problem, none of the system files are stored on your hard drive (ex. XMB, system firmware, etc.) nor do they run from the drive. However, your hard drive does contain a full backup of your SYSTEM files and thus when you choose option 3: RESTORE FILE SYSTEM it rewrites the original system files from your drive (which aren’t corrupted) back to the flash memory which is corrupted thus fixing the problem.

Thanks eddhorse. That looks like a very helpful post. I'm away from home at the min, I'll give that a go when i'm home.
Fingers crossed it works because the PS3 was in perfect working order before that stupid update!! :(

Can you update via USB stick even though you have the same firmware?
Didn't think you could , thought it would say "there are no newer firmwares available"

Manual is here by the way : http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/index.html

    Doesn't say much
    System Update

Software updates may include security patches, new or revised settings and features and other items, which will change your current operating system. It is recommended that you always maintain your system to use the latest version of the system software.

There are two ways to update as listed below:

    * Update via Internet
    * Update via Storage Media

    Notices

    * Do not turn off the system or remove media during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
    * During an update, the power button on the system front and the PS button on the wireless controller are not active.
    * Depending on the content, you may not be able to play without first updating the system software.

    Update via Internet

Download the update data directly to the system from the Internet. The latest update is automatically downloaded.

    1.

    Select (Settings) > (System Update).

    update001.jpg

    2.

    Select [Update via Internet].
Download the latest update data from the Internet. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the operation.
    Update via Storage Media

Use update data saved on a disc, Memory Stick™ or other media. Download the update data from a Web site using a PC. For more information, visit the SCE Web site for your region.
    Hints

    * Update data may also be contained in some game discs, commercially available BD video software, and other types of disc media. When you play a disc that contains update data, a screen will be displayed to guide you through the update process. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the update.
    * An appropriate USB adaptor (not included) is required to use storage media with some models of the PS3™ system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭Super Drogs

Hey eddhorse, I followed those instructions exactly as printed but unfortunately they didn't fix my problem! Thanks anyway.

And I thought I could re install the same update again after downloading from the PC, but my PS3 just says "No Applicable Data Found" on the USB stick! (Even though I checked it on a friends PS3 and his recognised it and asked did I want to update again!!)

So I'm all out of ideas, just going to ring Playstation support, and probably be told that it's not their fault!!

Actually have you put PS3 & UPDATE folders on your USB flash drive. PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP ??
I know it works on your mates PS3 though.

Yeah, I made all the correct folders on the USB stick! Strange that they don't show up on mine.

Rang support and was told, as expected, that the update couldn't be the cause of my problems! Even though they only arose when I updated!
I was told I could bring my PS3 back to them and get the same model back in exchange for 160 Euro. Not too sure if that's such a good deal. Mine was a 40gig Fat one , but was perfect, really quiet fan etc.
I'd hate to get one back and then discover it has a fan that sounds like a lawn mower!!

If it were me I'd hold off until the next f/w update comes out & try again. Knowing Sony it wont be long, and if it doesn't work it will still cost you €160 quid so no harm in waiting.

Agreed, they are popping out the firmwares to stop the jailbreaking and PSGrooving at the moment...

Yeah i'm going to hold on alright. I somehow managed to get Modern Warfare 2 in and playing earlier! So I'm going to leave it like that, and seeing as it's still perfect for watching movies and Tv shows, I might end up buying a new model and keep this one for watching stuff. And only playing one game!!
