In order for skype to stop crashing on my xp desktop ; i had to allow all for skype in Program control in Norton Internet Security Firewall. Is this normal or even safe ?

You shouldn't have to give it full access.

When does your norton subscription expire.

    Have you read: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/support/user-guides/firewalls/technical/

Skype gave me some pointers including renaming a certain executable file which seems it is currently stable.

stop using norton, its crapware and bloatware.
you are probably sure to have viruses on your system while using norton.
try downloading malwarebytes and do a quick scan with that to see if you have any problems.
also you are probably better off using a better firewall, windows firewall does a better job but comodo firewall is even better and its free.

people seem to think that they need to pay money to have thier computer kept safe but in reality the free or open source programs do a better job.

I am surprised that norton is not as good as some of the freeware you document. Particuarly that windows firewall is better than nortons

    Hi
It would be a good idea to remove Norton if the licence is near it's end. I would recommend removing Norton with the norton removal tool and installing Microsoft security essentials and Malwarebytes. With this combo you're system will run much better.:)
