Free NCT?

    This has probably been asked before, but I can't seem to find anything on it with the search function;

    Basically, I booked an NCT in June & was given a date for it for today. According to the NCT website, if the lead-in time is over 4 weeks, then the NCT is free of cost. Does this work in practice? And also, as I was due to have this particular car tested in March, but didn't book the test until June, does that make any difference?

    AFAIK you have to request the free test at the time of booking or tell them you want it within 4 weeks or will ba availing of the free test. Everytime i book a test they give me a date 6/7 weeks away and i say i want em in 4 or they will be free. I always get them very soon after that. Chance your arm sure when ya go to the test centre, no harm in trying!! Print the page of the NCT website and bring it with ya. This will be interesting

    Well, when I got there, the guy said that I'd have to ring the customer service line about getting the test for free. I did & was told that as I had accepted the date that was offered on the website, I wasn't entitled to a free test.

    She said that you will only get a free test if you call & ask for a priority booking & they can't fit you in within a 4 week period. This, however is not stated as such in the customer charter on their website, which says;
    We aim to ; 4.Ensure that an average leadtime for an appointment at anindividual test centre is less than three weeks with a free test if this is greater than four weeks.

    And having read the thread that Biko linked, I think it's worth the price of a stamp & a letter of complaint to see if I get a refund!

    On a good note, the car passed - despite having worn out brake discs & pads, almost bald back tyres, one of the wing mirrors hald missing & the petrol cap cover missing too!

    on a bad note, you should still get those problems on the car fixed,
    brakes and tyres are fairly important:)

    I did an article on this recently, I got the test for free even though I didn't ask for a special date. Granted I'm still waiting for the cheque to come back. Call them and send in the receipt, you'll get your money back as a gesture of good will.
    Keep on to them.
