I'm in my third year of commerce specialising in economics, and i'm just wondering if the big 4 only recruit people with accounting specific degrees?

I checked the websites but it wasn't really clear

    Thanks!

Yes - in some circumstances they may even prefer non-business degrees such as engineering. But certainly not limited to accounting degrees.

    Good luck

Plenty of people at my Big 4 with economics degrees. So long as you can tell a story about why accounting, doesn't matter what you studied.

I did commerce myself and didn't specialise in accounting so they definitely do from my experience and those of friends.

Absolutely they take economics grads. For a lot of them they do not enter directly into the firm but expect you to take a conversion postgrad - usually called a PDA - there are a number of them in Dublin (eg DIT, DCU). As far as I know most non-accounting grads would take something like this to get exemptions from Chartered Accountants Ireland and to get a basic grounding to ensure that they are up to speed with an accounting grad.

Yep - with a big four firm and we have engineering grads, law grads etc. Would really consider deferred entry though - a year in college doing a Masters in Accounting is infinitely preferable to sitting CAP 1s and CAP 2s.

Check up on what exemptions you'll be entitled to. The M Acc will also ensure you'll start on a level playing field with other trainees.

I'm social sciences and in a big4 accountancy grad programme, i know general biz and maths grads and lots of people with practically no exemptions from cap1 who got jobs. Be good at the competencies and explain the accountancy desire and you'll be just as likely to get in if you make a good application and have the grades to back it up.

    Best of luck applying!
