Had a virus now cannot connect to net

Hi

I recently got some virus warnings for trojan generic19.Abq so using avg and malware bytes i scanned the system and removed the threats. My problem now is that I cannot connect to the Internet at all, whether I open IE or firefox I get a DNS error and it does nothing.

Any help appreciated., I've tried to roll back the system but it just doesn't work. Next step is full system reboot but I'd hope to avoid this !!

From a command prompt, run the following command 'ipconfig /all' (without the quotation marks) and post the results.

In work at the minute so cannot post the ipconfig, will do it when I get home.

I'm running Wondows Vista, connected wirelessely to a router via the built in card ( but also checked using a LAN cable direct to the router and still could not get on to the internet).

I also however have an xbox running wirelessely off the same router and that was working fine last night

Apologies in advance for piggy backing on this thread!

Basically having the same problem as OP. Have Vista, running on
UPC wireless, in built wireless card on laptop. Other laptops,
phone and PS3 working as per normal. Hve AVG running. While
surfing got a pop up saying a trojan. After a while or maybe it
was next reboot the internet was dodgy, working only half the
time. That has now increased to 99% of the time. For some reason
it can work randomly for a period of a few minutes but more or
less does not work. Getting a DNS / Error 105 Cannot connect to
server problem. Neither mozilla, chrome or explorer work.

So after removing Trojan with AVG, was still having problems.
Then ran Malwarebytes, removed more stuff, internet worked! But
for a few hours only. Most of the bugs were found in the Local –
Temp folder for the internet.

Tried to reconfigure IP with cmd prompt. Changed some settings
for TCP/IP to automatic. System Restore wont complete for me.
Tried running a Winsock fix but that wont complete either,
getting an Error 53 or something. Got the CD that came with the
laptop, reinstalled the network drivers, or at least I think I
did, to no avail.

I took photos with my phone of ipconfig all, apologies for
quality, hope it can be made out. If anyone could shed some
light on the situation I’d be extremely grateful. Have just
received an external hard drive in the post today. Just going to
backup all my important information and attempt to restore
laptop to factory settings hoping that that’ll solve my problem.

Ok, thats a lot of information.

Get a 30 day trial of eset if you can (http://www.eset.ie/download/free_trial_download.php) Get Smart Security.

Make sure to uninstall AVG before you install eset.

Install Ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and hijackthis (http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html)

Update eset and malware bytes.
Run a scan with Hijackthis and post the logs here.

Restart the pc in safe mode.

Run CCleaner to remove all temp files.

Scan with Malwarebytes and eset and post the logs here too.

Winsockxp fix will not work on Vista.

Ok People I had this exact problem (well I think I did.. my laptop would connect to the network but not the internet)..

I posted up here for a solution but none came!!! I was a couple of seconds away from a full reboot but then I got a brain wave... AND IT WORKED

First off go into your adaptors properties and make sure neitehr IPV4 or IPV6 are set to static IP

Then what I did was go into control panal -> device manager -> Network Adapters -> Go to driver tab -> and disable the network adapter -> Now re-enable the adapter and restart your laptop

This might solve the problem. It worked for me, Iv had no problems in the last 5 months

derra I'll try that out this evening if I get a chance.

If that fails I'll try hearny's suggestions. Will need to get access to another laptop to download them programs but should be able to get the use of one somewhere.

Havent been able to get Eset onto my system yet. Gonna borrow a laptop the evening and run it I hope.

Had my internet up and running again for a while. Two other laptops werent working on system, so turned router off / on and re-entered the password, all of a sudden internet started working again, for me and the other two laptops. But since, the two laptops have continued to work, mine had stopped again. Works every so often but only for a short period at a time.

Got an AVG pop-up, removed something, now when i start up my system it tells me I'm missing the bit I removed from the registry, oops.

Also, the symbol in the bottom corner for the connection, keeps switching from with / without the globe, having local only and full internet access.

I ran CCleaner is safe mode and when logged on, cleared over a gig of stuff first time.

I've uninstalled AVG but didnt change anything.

Ok Restart the PC in safe mode.

Run Hijack this again and make sure there are no other windows (not even folders) open.

Check the following entries and remove them.

Run the scan again to make sure they havent come back.

Then try to rename the files (add _backup to the end of them):

I included the AVG items to be removed since you said you had uninstalled it.
You can ignore them if you want.

Presume I start up in normal safe mode, as opposed to with networks working as well?

Do I just go into the Local\Temp folder and rename the above two files as in C:\Users\BC\AppData\Local\Temp\yihc.exe_backup? Not too sure on this part.

Yeah start the pc in Normal safe mode.

Those 2 files are running from the Temp folder always a sign to be weary of it.

You can rename the file
C:\Users\BC\AppData\Local\Temp\yihc.exe_backup
or
C:\Users\BC\AppData\Local\Temp\yihc_backup.exe

Depends on whether or not you can see the .exe when renaming The first one would be better but it doesn't really matter (as long as you don't run it again) We will delete the files when we are running ok anyway.

The Folders may be hidden so you need to be able to View Hidden files:

Ran Hijackthis in safe mode. Fixed what I could find. I notice that at least the McAfee one remains, says cannot find file now.

When I boot the system now I'm no longer getting the pop up to say "fgkxan.exe" missing from registry. I cant however find either the .exe files in the local\temp folder. Hidden files are showing.

I turned the router off / on and re-entered network password again, didnt work as it had done before.

Connect the computer to the network.
Run the command prompt and run the command
"ipconfig /all > ipconfig_results.txt"
(without quotes and post the results here) the results will go into the file ipconfig_results.txt you will find it in the folder displayed on the command line

C:\users\USERNAME

Try connecting into the router with a cable to test if you can connect.

So I cheated

Got very awkward trying to run programs on my own computer to transfer results to another (only have access to one at work) to going back to my own. Eventually lost patience over the weekend and just did a factory reset. Everything working again.

Just want to say thanks hearny, really appreciate you helping me step by step, sorry I quit on ya!
