Is there any way around the network's restriction on streaming video? Why must it block Flash and Java streaming video? The website my friends all use to chat on webcam at the same time won't load and it's beyond frustrating. Any ideas on what to do?:mad::(

    They do? \o/ Yay.

Maybe because they don't want idiots blathering on about non-academic stuff to the annoyance of the other 50 people inthe complute rlab?

People live with this internet too you know!

TCD also blocks things like online games and VOIP programs. :<

I'm fairly sure they don't. The problem is that many applications don't support authentication to a proxy, or even routing through a proxy at all.

Even with an enterprise line, 17,000(I fink) people create a lot of traffic. Bandwidth usage is always going to be an issue but preventing video/audio streaming would help.

Well, without having horrible ping times anyway. :)

For applications like these try user:pass@proxya.tcd.ie as the proxy.

Meh, they've a 10GB line. Contention isn't going to be the issue, the web proxies are.

    RTE player works, skype works.

Proxy is part of the firewall arrangement to block traffic going to places it shouldn't. No peer to peer for a start

Policy is such that no site is blocked unlike many other third level colleges where bebo and facebook are selectively blocked

Oh. I must try it myself sometime actually. :)

70ms is just unacceptable in this day and age. How are you supposed to hit a triple airshot with that kind of delay? IMPOSSIBLE!

    Hacks baby, hacks.

Actually that sort of ping is exactly what you want if you're playing sniper.

Find me a vid/demo of a sniper hitting a triple airshot with 70ms ping. I dare you.

Reminded me of this (yes that is a graveyard, not a spawn site).

If you want to open all ports and have unrestricted access to the web (and prevent ISServices from keeping a record of every single website you have ever visited), then an ssh tunnel is the way to go.

Please don't ask me how to set this up.

Don't forget to tunnel your DNS requests too. ;)

Indeed. Easy to forget. I have my own DNS on my server.

The proxy is annoying. I can't seem to fetch my emails or blog updates via my email/blog clients. Using user:pass@proxy.tcd.ie doesn't seem to help.

Also, are any Linux users able to access their repositories through the proxy?

Sigh, every year people ask these questions.

I had tried that before, didn't seem to work. I presumed that the proxy itself was disallowing me access. Anyway I'm heading back up in a couple of days with Arch installed, so we'll see if it's any easier or harder to connect with than Ubuntu.

And please, being condescending when someone asks a question is unconstructive. Thank you for your advice though.

Does it? I can't get it to work. Is there anything in particular I have to do?

    P.S. sorry for the bump

Shooty shooty lasers. The enterprise line of ships can do anything.
