    It was a Chinese Lantern!....No wait....wrong thread.....

    :D

Saw it too. It was a vapour trail from an aircraft. Wasn't too wide to be from an aircraft when I saw it because it was fresh and hadn't started to spread out in the wind yet. Are ye telling me you have never seen a fresh vapour trail during the day spread out and disapate?

Oh, My Bad! I didn't realise you led such a hectic and exciting lifestyle that you never heard an airliner fly over while mowing the lawn or walking the dog and then happen to look up 20 minutes later and see how the trail had spread out.

If it was really faint and stretched across the entire sky, it could have just been the milky way. Although, I can't imagine being able to see it in Dublin with the amount of light pollution there - so maybe it was just a plane.

As any of the regulars in this forum will tell you, you should try and look up more often. There are wonders to be seen. Go out any night at present and look towards the east early in the night and towards the south if it is later and you will see a very bright object. It is not a star, as many people coming into this forum to ask about think it is. It is the planet Jupiter. It is up there in the sky, unmistakeable by its brightness compared to anything around it. That is just one thing that is very simple to see. Currently the moon is even easier to see and a few moments looking at it will have you notice details you may never have seen, like the specific dark and light areas it has, even when full.

A lot of people don't like the oncoming dark and lengthening nights at this time of year, but for those of us interested in astronomy, they do have some redeeming features. It is still late when it rises, but the most magnificent constellation of them all is coming into view these nights. It is Orion. Over the coming months it will rise earlier and earlier each night and over the course of the winter, as it does every year on our journey around the sun, it will come to dominate the night sky with its unmistakeable form:

    orion_spinelli_c1.jpg

It is very easy to see and beautiful to observe. It contains many wonders like the noticeable difference in colour between the red Betelgeuse in the top left and the bluish-white Rigel in the bottom right. People who don't look too often think all stars are the same colour. These pair show that that is not the case. Even with the naked eye you will notice that. No other equipment is needed.

Dangling below the 3 stars in the middle, which are known collectively as Orion's Belt, is the Orion Nebula. It is a very noticeable feature, with its bright and dusty appearance. Even in light-polluted Dublin, Orion and its many features are clearly visible.

In short, don't wait until you retire before looking at the wonders in the sky. You'll be sorry at all the wasted years. So on any clear night, go outside and have a look at what is there. Astronomy is a very simple hobby to start. All you have to do is go outside and look up. You won't be sorry if you do. Keep a look in here to learn more. Notice of what is coming or to be seen at present are always here, whether they be stars, planets, comets, meteor showers, the International Space Station, particular constellations and a whole lot more. At present you say you have no knowledge of these things, but in time you will and all it takes to kick start it is to take a few minutes to have a look on some clear night, maybe before you "retire" to bed.

    Hi Folks,

I'm out side Loughrea Co.Galway.Around 8.45pm last night (29 Sep 2010) I was lucky to see what I presume was a meteor travelling south to north.
It was EXTREMELY bright (brighter than Jupiter currently)
I've been checking the forum this morning to see if anyone else saw it...no Joy though.

    Regards,
    Doc.
