Debt collection

Moved out of an apartment about a year ago, I supposedly owed money for a service I was recieving while at the apartment. They are charging me up to 2 months after I moved out. I was supposed to give a months notice, I didn't. First I heard of it was a week ago when I got a call from an agency looking for the money. It's not a lot but I was wondering if this sort of thing effects my credit rating or anything? I will be paying the amount owed shortly. Am somewhat annoyed at the lack of effort the service company put in to try and contact me, as they have my number and email. They passed on my number to the debt collection agency but they didn't contact me themselves. Anyway, any advice is welcome.

Would you know how the credit rating system works? I am quite clueless about it really.

I pay all my bills, I have never missed a direct debit or standing order and I have paid numerous loans long before the end of the term. I don't want to mess up the rating I have built up over the years.

In a house I lived in years ago, the ESB was in the landlords name, he would ask us to open the letters and pay the bills. A few lads left and didn't pay their share of the bill. Letters from the ESB and Bord Gais stated that his credit rating would be adversely effected if it wasn't paid immediately, this went on for about 18 months. I continued to pay my share of the bills. Not quite sure what happened, or if the ESB and Bord Gais could alter his credit rating.

Check http://www.icb.ie/membership.php . See if the organisation is a member. If they are not there is nothing to be worried about.

ESB and Bord Gais are not members.

Bord Gáis Finance is listed there. Not quite sure what they do though.

How would a local authority effect your credit rating? That one is a bit confusing.

    Thanks for the link :)

They provide loans for gas installations like cookers etc. A separate entity entirely, they do not supply gas.
