Yipee VLC is in the app store for free download, no more need for conversions through handbrake watch .avi files on your iPad.

it's a little clunky adding videos
it doesn't pick up on sync'd content for the video app - you have to "Add" the content directly from the App page in iTunes ... keep scrolling, you'll find it

tried SD xvid *.avi without any problem
tried 720p h264 *.mkv - the app sees it, marks it HD, but warns that "your ipad may be too slow to play this media" ... it was right - totally unwatchable
tried SD MPEG2 *.iso but the app doesn't even see the file

shame about the less recognisable icon too ...

Why bother with local apps that use local files when you can stream and convert on the fly with things like AirVideo and iFunia iPad Video Converter? I really just don't see value in this at all. Also, how does one ftp a file to the player? It seems to require iTunes... at least the opening screen seems to point to that. If this had the ability to access dropbox, ftp or the like it might be nice for someone who is on the go and offline (airplane etc.) With iFunia you can convert on the fly or locally as well so with just a few more minutes you get the best of both worlds in one app.

No delete from the device either, you need to use iTunes and highlight the file then press delete on the keyboard.

No benefits over CineXplayer for me anyway.

As well as lacking basic features, the video playback quality on VLC is poor compared to CineXplayer.

It's a disappointing début but I'm sure the app will improve with later versions.
