i have a 16 month old heifer with swollen eye sockets. The eyes dont seem to be infected .If she got hit between the eyes by another animal would this cause it.I was planning on bringing her to the mart at the weekend thats gone now, typical.Anyone came across this before and any remedys to get swelling down?

    Hi john mayo,

Sounds like your heifer could possibly have angioneurotic oedema a.k.a. 'the blain' and which my neighbour calls "hippo head", which is common enough at this time of the year. We get it in the odd cow on one field on an outfarm. It often disappears as fast as it appeared.

If not, maybe one for your vet to take a look at, if she still has it? It can be very uncomfortable for the affected animal, and they often seem distressed, shaking their head etc.

Best of luck with it, hope you get her sorted out and back to herself, I am off to the Ploughing for the next two days.

    Best regards,

There's a possibility that its pink eye as its common in this weather. It makes the eyes appear smaller and sockets appear swollen. There doesn't necessarily have to be an infection, but the eyes may be running water?
Earlier this year, I had a few calves with a similar problem. The vet put a name on it that i cannot remember, but I know that he said it was an avarian disease, carried and transferred by birds that were feeding at or around the creep feeder. he said it would pass, and it did.

At the end of the day, your best bet is to get your vet to have a look at her - he/she is the best person to make a diagnosis. Sunken eyes that are a pale blueish colour can often mean that an animal is in pain.
