Virus Protection and Laptops on NAC system

    Hi all,

I realize that all laptops using the college system have to have McAfee installed, but I was wondering whether it is possible to install another virus protection (e.g. Spybot) after re-connecting to the college network?

Anyone tried this before? Any success with it?

Once you pass the NAC test, you can do what you like.

ISS have become aware of this and now require you to reregister from time to time, in which case you will have to install McAfee again.

Good stuff. Never really trusted McAfee!

On the note of getting around NAC restrictions... is there any way of using msn client/skype/steam?

Whats the story with the NAC and non windows installs? Do they expect us to run McAfee in WINE? :p

I disabled my AV (didn't uninstall it or close it), installed McAfee, did the registration stuff, then uninstalled it and re-enabled my AV.

On non-windows they expect you to do something different, which I believe does not include McAfee. I doubt you need any AV at all tbh...

No, on Mac they just check if you have the lastest system update installed, and on Linux is left as an exercise for the reader.

I know it's petty but... jeez, who put those NAC pages together and why did they never learn how to use apostrophes properly? Bad enough having to put up with their whims re: browsers and AVs.

The linux process is a bit silly, as far as I can see they have no security requirements but still make you download a program to verify that you meet those requirements...

As far as I know that program is just to make sure that you're not just spoofing the user agent string from your browser.

What does the NAC completion actually log with the WDS does anybody know? Is it just MAC Address? I've three installs and I'll be using two online, required to do it twice?(Not that it makes much diff).

I think it's MAC address, it's certainly not tied to one OS or anything. You should on;y have to do it once AFAIK.

It has been talked about at length before. :)

EDIT: I wrote these instructions a long time ago. Might be of some use.

Just want to know if anyone else has had this problem. After installing MacAfee the updater gives an error, 'can't find valid repository' or something similar and then cancells the update.

Can't get passed this, I'll be contacting ISS next week but has anyone had this before? I use XP SP3.
