    Hi,

I've got my test coming up pretty soon and just heard something about a filter light. If you turn left out of the test centre and come to the junction between Orwell Road and Orwell Park, you may be asked to turn left onto Orwell Park.

I've heard of people doing this and stopping at the junction when the light is red waiting for the filter light. However apparently there is no filter light and the testers only take you there to see if you would stop or not.

Could someone please tell me if this happens or what one would do in this situation?

I don't know the geography of the area. Can you explain how people could be waiting for a filter on a left turn? If it's safe to turn right or go straight, it also must be safe to turn left, no?

If there is no "red" aspect on the filter then you need to pull into the yellow box when the main light goes green. When there is a gap, turn, or, when the lights go yellow and red, you must go. Often this activiates the filter for you then.

You may be confusing it with a right green filter light. Some motorists unnecessarily wait for a right turn filter light when they already have a standard green light. There is no need to wait for the filter if one can safely turn using the normal green.

(It happens all the time in Santry, southbound on the Swords Road at the right turn into the Omni Shopping Centre. Motorists waiting for a filter when there is nothing coming the other way and looking totally perplexed when they get a gentle beep from those behind!)

Some more info on the lights would be very helpful. There are 2 kinds of lights for forward movement. Arrow and solid greed. If it is a solid Green then the right hand turn into the road would be fine once the way was clear. If not then you should take position where the road dictates.

You CANNOT turn right if there is only an arrow showing forward only. You must wait for the filter light. There should be a solid red light to stop you in this case but you never know.
