UK Gatso Cameras

    Hi all,

I was driving down the M25 motorway in my Irish reg car last night, doing my best to keep within the limits. Unfortunately though I must have missed one of the variable message speed signs and a Gatso flashed me(doing 70mph in a 60mph zone). As far as I'm aware it isn't possible that they can send out fixed penalty notices to cars in other jurisdictions so is it likely I'll be getting a fine in the post. Ids this correct? Also I remember talk about the UK being able to put points on an Irish licence. Did this ever happen?

they can't put points on your irish license. you're probably best to pay the fine to avoid any future issues down the road if you're in the uk again.

to the best of my knowledge (and open to correction here) the only agreement currently is that a driving ban in the north applys in the south and vice versa. i don't believe the "mainland" is included.

Believe me you wont hear a thing, in the not too distant past i went on a road trip to Scotland with a bunch of lads.. we set off nearly every camera we came across and a year later no tickets etc

afew mths ago in armagh i got street ticket, ignored it as usual and to my surprise i got it in post, so imagine all fines are traceable,
but i agree at present to my knowledge no points can be given, and north-south bans stand!!

Ah, i was making reference to a friend back from a couple of business trips to Scotland..

Indeed something may have happened between north/south relations in that regard.

You're nearly there but not quite. The agreement is between Ireland and the UK so that's GB included. It is mutual recognition of driving bans issued by either jurisdiction for serious driving offences i.e. the ones that merit an immediate ban. It does not include bans issued by your home country for penalty points and the other country cannot impose points on your licence. So in effect you could get flashed all day long in the UK for minor speeding infractions and your Irish licence remains unaffected, but do something (e.g dangerous driving) that gets you banned in a UK court and the UK authorities can apply to the Irish authorities to have you banned at home too. Vice-versa.

It is often the case that these cameras flash but there is no film in the camera.

I recently (June 2010) hired a car in UK and hiring company charged me GBP 35 towards administration fee for providing my driving license details to the authorities for speeding offence. Since then I have not heard anything about my penalty points on my irish driving license and also for any payment.
