Chances of getting the H Dip Ed in NUI?

I'm in final year Arts studying French and Spanish and really want to apply for secondary teaching, but is it as impossible to get into as everyone says? I only got a 2.2 average in second year so I'm worrying about my chances, but lots of people have told me different stories about admission being based on good grades / good references / random selection. Anybody know how it actually works?

You have big boobs, right? You should be grand.

While the boobs in question are indeed remarkable, and probably deserve their own thread, we should probably keep abreast with the topic at hand :D

Well put theginsandwich... I'm applying to be a teacher not a wet nurse

On topic please... there's boards.sin.ie for spamming like that!

A 2.2 seems unlikely to get a person into the H.Dip without some extenuating circumstances. You're better off emailing the department in question or calling in and asking directly.

http://www.pac.ie/pgdeinfo/PointsCalc.php?inst=pe <<<< how it works. If you are short points you could do a masters which gives you 6 points extra but as you would finish your masters in 2012, that would mean you could not start your PGDE until September 2013. They will not give you the 6 points for the masters until you have completely finished it by which time the application deadline for September 2012 PGDE entry would have well passed.

If you could get work as a translator you can get points for that also. You can get points for working with young people. This has to be paid employment.

Trinity College Dublin do not work on this points system. Voluntary work would move you up the ranking list here but you will be battling with 2.1 graduates.

Perhaps your best plan is to knuckle down for a good 2.1 this year and start the PGDE in September 2012.

I'd go with studying as best you can this year and trying to raise that a bit. A 2.2 is very good but so many applying for it with 2.1s or 1.1s etc., it would really really help you to pull that up a bit.

As said, a masters is also a good idea (apart from the delay in applying).

The application system starting for next year is slightly different as you no longer get accreditted for teaching hours so the selection is based purely on your academic qualifications. I got a 2.1 and have a masters and I got in first time. There is much more competition for places amongst Arts graduates so a 2.1 is your absolute minimum target but I personally think you will need a 1.1 and be applying to do a masters at the same time as you may not get in with just your Arts degree alone

This is true to the extent that:

"Points are not awarded for teaching in a second-level school while unqualified"

    However,

    "Normally accepted for points purposes...

Full time teaching in a school in another country
Working as a full time special needs assistant.
Working as a full time classroom assistant.
Full time teaching in a third level or FE college.
Full time teaching in a school (this arises in a small number of cases in VEC schools)."

You're provisionally awarded a place based on your 2nd year results, with the assumption being you'll get a 2:1 overall. If it was a high 2:2 I would apply in the hope they have some sort of faith in you.
