My top three are as follows:

    1. Bernard Brogan.

    2. Johnny Doyle (Who picked the RTE Team of the Year?).

    3. Marty Clarke.

Gotta be Brogan for me. He carried Dublin to the semis - scoring 3-42 or something like that. Doyle had a great year but not as good I think. And Clarke after yesterdays showing won't take it from Brogan.

Bernard Brogan for me. Instrumental in Dublin's revival after the Meath debacle.

If Down had won yesterday and had Clarke played well he'd have probably been given it though.

As a Meathman, it pains me to say Brogan. He's a class apart.

I'd agree with that. I had the same discussion with a colleague who felt that it was Bernard Brogans alone and he was untouchable. Like you though, I think that if Marty Clarke had been instrumental in a Down victory on Sunday then he would have taken the accolade. As it transpired Michael Shields put the shackles on him and he didn't get a chance.

Brogan will take this years top spot.

It was Noel O'Leary who marked him. And did a very good job like he always does, but never gets any credit for.

Bernard Brogan was definitely the outstanding footballer of 2010. Hopefully he will actually get the award.

Brogan must have been head and shoulders above the rest when you see this many non Dubs backing him :D

    In no particular order:

Johnny Doyle - Champoinship top scorer yet again, enough said
Bernard Brogran - Pure quality in all aspects of his game and a prolific scorer
Marty Clarke - Had a great season. He was dominant in almost every match he played, and he's only 22.

    Also rans:
    James Kavanagh
    Aiden Walsh
    Brian White
    Benny Coulter (Square balls aside!)

    Go away you!

Marty Clarke was good but nowhere near Johnny Doyle never mind Brogan...

Brogan carried a very average Dublin team to a semi-final and bar utter stupidity and a lack of discipline Dublin would have been in the final.

For those who think Doyle should have gotten it... he only scored a point more than Brogan and far more from a placed ball.

Clarker scored more than 20 points less than both these players, he is a distant third in my eyes.

Was it 1-9 that Brogan scored against Cork? He was unmarkable all summer, not just one game but all summer.

Tell me, how many points did Paul Galvin score last year? Carrying a Dublin team doesn't automatically equate to POTY. If Marty Clarke had been instrumental in a victory for Down on Sunday - as imperious as he was against Kerry and Kildare - then he could easily have been given the due accolade. But he didn't, so it's neither here nor there.

Brogan will get it, I've no qualms with that, but Clarke had the opportunity on Sunday to claim it. To be so insistant that he couldn't is just showing your bias towards Atha Cliath.

Correct but playing head and shoulders above everyone else in the country all summer does.

Was Brogan playing against Meath??? don't remember him getting the ball much:D

he had a great year, was marked well in some games but was unstoppable in the 'business end'

    Bernard Brogan. Full stop.

Brogan was the most consistent and the best Dublin player this year. Dragged a young and inexperienced team from a resounding defeat to Meath to an All-Ireland semi-final, beating Tyrone in the process.

Brogan would edge it in front of Johnny Doyle for me.

Martin Clarke for me, i wouldnt give it to Brogan tbh - the reason being that if Goulding, Donncha O'Connor, Coulter, Johnny Doyle or any other top-class forward had an entire team absolutely working their asses off just to win the ball and give it to them, like Brogan did, then they probably would have scored as much if not more than him

Realisticly all Brogan did was make runs out to the sides, recieve the pass and pop them over, yes he got some great scores and is a smashing footballer but i believe any top-class forward would have matched him had they the same caliber of delivery and a gameplan entirely focused around them

Clarke on the other hand brought something different, something that no other player in the country brough to the table and that's the reason i'd give it to him.

    Easy, isn't it?

Others might have scored as much with the same focus on them... but the reason they didn't set their teams up that way was because it would be too predictable. Dublin's gameplan was entirely predictable but teams still couldn't stop him (and that includes the eventual champions).

Clarke being 'different' isn't enough for me. He's a smashing footballer but Brogan was a level above everyone this year.

Brogan because he shone in an average team and carried them to a semi-final due to his excellent displays.
Some of the other candidates had better footballers around them in my opinion.

Brogan definitely IMO. Carrying a team doesn't equate to it but Brogan did more than that. Would love to be able to tout someone else for it and suggest Dublins progress was down to the entire team coming together (which they slowly are i think/hope) but the simple fact is that most of it was down to him. No other player had that much put on their shoulders and live up to it game after game. Alot, who have been already mentioned, do come close tho but i think Brogan has to have it.

    Eh Bernard Brogan, by miles.
Dunno how Ian K can even consider Marty Clarke. Was hammered my Noel O'Leary in the Final. Wasnt in the game much against Tyrone either, one great point from play but... where was he after that. I know footballer of the year is about more then point scoring, but Bernard Brogan was unmarkable. Tyrone had 2 men on him for a good shot of the game, and he beat them all endds up.

Footballer of the year is about the whole year, not just kicking frees against Kerry and being effective against an weak Kildare midfield half back line. Brogan for me was class all year.

p.s If Kerry had gotton any further I think the Gooch would have challenged this year. Looked revitalised in the few games he played in. It was great to see the Gooch of old back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭crebel81

For me, I would marginally pick Brogan over Clarke. Excellent players but I thinks Noelie did a good job on Clarke last Sunday.

As for the Gooch, yes a great player but I think another 20 players would be in the running with him.

As always, and i dont blame anyone for this, but we always seem to focus on the forwards. What about midfield and the defence. These guys do savage work which aint pretty but credit must be given.

Anyhow Brogan is my choice, but marginally behind is M.Clarke, Doyle, Shields, Shine, Aidan Walsh...

has to be brogan followed by marty clarke.not trying to get a sly dig in but brogan was very quiet in the meath game think he "only" scored three points and one or two was from frees.its no coincidence dublin got going when he did following that game.i wouldnt have johnny doyle anywhere near it to be honest i thought his free taking was very erratic he could miss a simple one and then hit one from an impossible angle.

Dont agree with this - Kildare dont have a left footed free taker so Doyle took a few with his weaker foot, understandably he missed a few - dont recall him missing any "simple" ones on his right foot though!
His scoring from play was unbelievable at times too

John Galvin - not only is he the best footballer in the country, he's also the best looking :)

(just like to add that i'm not gay)

Brogan head and shoulders above the rest this year. Despite being a heavily marked man (as posters have indicated dublin's only constant threat) could still do the business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭Bbbbolger

Brogan had an amazing year, no doubt about that. But too much emphasis is being put on scoring here. I know you can't win a game without someone to kick your scores and provide "moments of magic" but what about the hard working midfielders and dogged backs? Every succesful team is built on a solid defence. Without it the forwards, no matter how good they are, wouldn't get the chance to score.

Michael Shields, Paudie Kissane, Dan Gordon, Emmet Bolton, Eamon Callaghan and John Galvin all deserve mentions here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭jimbo32123

emmet bolton, graham canty, marty clarke or michael dara mccauley for me, good hard working honest players, dont seem them running about pullin up there socks every 3 minutes!! winning ball matters more to them than there socks and how much they scored..too much is made of these marque forwards!!!!! Time to break the mould, me personally id give it to graham canty he would be a deserved winner in my eyes

Congrats to Bernard Brogan - the only real contender for "Player of the Year".

    1. Bernard Brogan

    2. Marty Clarke

    3. Colm Gooch Cooper

    4. Michael Shields

    5. Geoffrey Claffey

Anyone that mentions Geoffrey Claffey deserves some props! I was near the goal end when Claffey basically won the Connacht championship with his one-on-one save against David Kelly and I was behind the goal end agian when Cork where seemingly getting half a dozen players inside their markers every time they kicked the ball into the Roscommon half at the ned of the game and more than a few saves Claffey made where special - it's utterly amazing Cork only manged a single goal from all those breaks, and it all came down to Claffey. I know I'm biased, but I cannot understand how the Tyrone keeper - out at the quarters too - got an All-Star nomination instead of Claffey.
