But seriously, does anyone else think this thing is hugely over-priced?
Like it's a midi controller at best and all the brains and engineering lies with the software (I'm a software developer:D )

Don't get me wrong, I'd love one but I aint gonna spend that money on one, I'd prefer going down the (second hand) CDJ route for that money.

    Yeah they are expensive alright..
But then, it's down to personal preferance..

Sayin that I wont be gettin one anytime soon, and by the time I can afford one they will probably have somethin newer again so it's never ending :D

Very close to just getting another set of 1210's :)

Price up buying Traktor Pro, a high quality sound card and a midi controller with as many functions and abilities as the S4 and I imagine it's worth the money.

well yes, but it's not a complete solution even when you factor in those items, a laptop is needed too etc and then you introduce the risks of problems associated with the laptop etc..

Traktor Pro: €199 (but you should be able to manage an upgrade discount if you buy a controller with Traktor LE bundled)

    Soundcard: Audio4DJ €185 (thomann)

Midi Controller - anything from BCD3000 (which includes soundcards)(€133 - thomann) upwards but I wouldn't spend too much on a midi controller really, it's just a input/output box really, does nothing else.

Still it works out cheaper but I'm only coming from a bedroom DJ perspective so yep, in terms of a professional setup it's not big money I gather (as long as you're earning for your gigs ;))

I see your point I suppose. I'll be buying an S4 as soon as it comes out, for 3 reasons: The flawless integration with Traktor, the all-in-one set up (I already have a laptop so don't need to buy that) and the fact that I can afford it. I am not by any means a great DJ (only starting really), and will probably not use all of the features of the S4 for a good while, but... Hmm I'm sure there was a 'but' there justifying the purchase

It does seem a bit steep of a price but it's like what people always say about buying a Macbook. You pay the extra money for the flawless operation and reliability.

Yeah Macbooks are expensive too but as said above, ya pay for what ya get and its stable and reliable, and either way if you pay that money for an S4 its gonna last you years if you want it too, and if you sell it 2nd hand you wont lose too much I wouldnt imagine :)

good points. And I like the way Native Instruments are so active with their product range and support. They seem to be setting their targets of being the market leader for DJ and music production software and by producing their own hardware for seamless integration it will demonstrate the software to the best of its ability.
It's the sort of work (software development) I'd love to be involved with myself.
