I'm planning on completing the ironman distance race in Barcelona 2011 and I've read in a few places that Group Training is Essential. Is there anybody else planning an Ironman next year if so do you want a training partner? Please note I said I wanted to complete the race not win it, I’m not the fastest but I’ll get there.

I think squad based training is definitely a huge bonus.

The key would be finding a similar group of people.

What sort of splits would you be thinking of for the swim, bike and run?

it's very early days for me to be making assumptions on splits but i'd currently be looking at 1.30 - 2 hr swim, 7 hour bike, 5-6 hour run. throughout the year i'd be looking to reduce these time significantly

I meant more what a realistic estimate of your race day splits were?

it's too early for me to give estimated times

Cool - would have helped in seeing did I know anyone looking for training partners.

What speed do you hold for a 3 hour easy bike? (assuming flat and no wind)
What pace do you hold for a 1-1:30 easy run? (assuming flat and no wind)

    Good luck with the training.

    Hi,
sort of related, am doing Austria next year. Does anyone have names or could recommend a coach that I could use.
    Thanks.

I'm also in for this. Still working out the details; probably going to mix some club sessions into the mix to avoid going mad, and may kick off a new training log on here to avoid slacking off. Im pretty happy with my swim, run is fine when not injured (although im not doing a lot of miles right now), but im terrible on a bike so going to have to get cracking on that given its where most time in the IM will go anwyay! Maybe we should kick of an austria thread in the events forum?

    Why not ))

I'm also swimming with the club.

All the rest I am on my own.

    Run in DL.
    Swim in Total Fitness Sandyford
    Cycle in Wicklow

It would be cool to see another IM log up there and another one on the SCR challenge perhaps :). I really enjoyed reading the likes of Griffin100, MetalDog, Izoard and Conor20 this year. Perhaps creating an 'Ironman Lounge' in the main forum for all Going Long type chat?

Can anyone share some training tips on the swim element, i pretty much have the other two well covered but my swim is very weak.

I'm curious what counts as very weak Liam Faint Dreamer? Most generic bit of advice I can offer off my very limited triathlon experience is to get yourself into a coached group-session. A coach will fix whatever you're doing wrong with your stroke, group will keep you motivated. I rarely manage to do the sets we do in a group when I'm in the pool by myself.

Alot of "coached swim sessions" just involve someone writing sets up and standing on the pool bank encouraging people. This has its place but not the swim is your weak part from a technical perspective.

Ouch! I've certainly done some of those swims, but ive been lucky to get a lot of actual coaching too.

you will be fine in IM france.
its a sea swim so you will be more buoyant than a pool, you'll be wearing a wetsuit so you will float on top like a cork, there are 2700 competitors in Nice departing from a narrow stony beach so the slipstream effect is great and the favourite of all non swimmers is that the swim is broken up into two laps so you can take it easy enough.
The most important thing for Nice is to save your legs for the first half of the bike (climbing) and acclimatise in advance for the run.
    good luck.

and unless you're trying for hawaii, do yourself a favour and bring your racer. tri-bikes in Nice are not to be recommended.

Out of curiousity can I ask why you'd recommend a racer rather than tri-bike for Nice?

Very technical course. I think the majority, including some pros would use drops with clip on aero bars.
