It's that time of the year again , Just wondering what and where people are getting good prices . And what the coal is like . I was getting smokeless coal delivered from Ger Walters last year @ €150 for 10 bags , at the start the coal was alright but as the year went on it got worse ... hard to light and sparking a lot . When I finally get through to them on the phone I will post up their prices for this year but i have been trying for the last half hour and no answer .

Yes that's quite good, around my way the price varies between 15 euro and 18 euro depending on quality.

Does anyone know if the carbon tax on coal has come into effect yet?

Its all well and good for the Green Party to sit around in their Sandals eating, organic Prunes and Yak Yogurt while enjoying the cozy underfloor heating paid for by us Idiots.

    * Edit *

But more seriously..... This is going to have serious implications for a lot of People who were already finding things very tough, especially the Elderly and People in the Countryside etc. who have no choice but to pay for their Coal + the extra nonsense taxes applied once brought in.

Raiser, you manage to turn half the threads you post in into rants about Fianna Fáil and/or the Green Party. If I see you do this again (from tonight onwards) I will start issuing cards/bans for off-topic posting and thread-spoiling. Get a blog if you want to vent about politicians.

I got 10 bags of smokeless delivered yesterday from Galtee Fuels for €150 , used it last night and it seemed ok . Fire started easy enough and it didn't spit sparks everywhere .

How long would you expect 10 bags to last?

It depends , I don't have oil or gas so coal heats my radiators , November to March last year I was using around 10 bags a month .

Do you not use blocks to make the coal last longer? Much cheaper

The fireplace is small enough and with the back boiler it is hard to get blocks that will fit , gonna make a better effort to look for suitable ones this year .

    Any updates folks?

    - Re. the above who delivers Blocks and what's a fair price to pay?

Six weeks later and the coal is allllll gone :(

Just ordered another 10 bags , price €150 delivered .

Tried the BNM eco friendly firelogs , they are the smaller 8 in a pack ones . great for starting the fire but at €4 a bale they would work out expensive .

I paid 22 Euros last week for a 40kg bag of coal at
    the local Co-op store.

Was not sure when I heard 17-18 Euros for a bag if that
was the price for a 20-25kg bag or if it ment a 40kg bag.

    spotted this site this morning:

Could somebody let me know what the difference is between Polish coal (€15 40kg) and English coal (€10-12 40kg) ?

I have been using Polish coal for the last few winters but I am curious about this english coal....it's certainly a lot cheaper.

Growing up Coal was bloody well coal.
You had nice shiny blue black lumps of rock that
you put in your fire. Nowadays things are all complicated.
(from the look of it from google image search this may have been what was considered "steam coal")

There are different grades of coal.
Depending how far your living outside of the city center
you may only be allowed to purchase smokeless.

Polish non-smokeless coal tends to be awesome.
smokeless seems to be a mix of Russian/Polish and others
    types mixed intogether.

smokeless coal is a gamble depending on the brand.
It may burn hotter for shorter and burn out your grate or
may spark all over the place and be a danger to setting your carpet on fire or pets that may sleep by the fire.

The typical smokless Sh1te seems to have 4 different mixtures in it. Shapes and sizes of the different bits
tend to vary from brand to brand also. Some bags
you might find little nuggests other brands are more coarse
and have bigger rougher around the edges pieces (which I think is better)

In smokeless you tend to see different shapes and sizes in a bag.
The mix tends to be a mixture of below:

Lignite seems to be a softer brown colour and almost like board na mona briquette and tends to burn catch fire quickly produce not much heat and burn out and fade away real quick.

Bituminous low or high grade tends to be the stuff I like least. some of it looks like plastic rather than anything rock related. looks like the inside of a crunchy bar only black. I'm convinced this sparks quite a bit but have no proof.

    Anthracite:
Were getting into the good **** now. Anthracite is the harder more rock like stuff that tends to burn real well.
no complaints here, the more of this in a bag the better for me.

Nuggets: Most smokeless coals contain artificially compressed nuggets that can either be soft and peat like or
black and dusty like and almost like a soft rock like texture.
Aparently these tend to Glow and hold the heat for longer, so instead of licks of flames you tend to get a more dull glowing thing as if the fire was nearly going out but the embers are still red hot.

Polish burns hotter and longer than English I've found, the coal that is.

Ah you know me....just give me the slighest excuse to whinge and moan about anything and I'm off ranting :D

I was asked for ID for ordinary coal a few years
back from some teenager behind a till and he refused to
sell me a bag of ordinary Polish. Ended up going out to Clarina to buy a few bags.

Hate using the smokless stuff as it sparks more and damages the grates quicker. I've had sparks burn my skin, the cats fur, the rug, leather sofa and wooden floor and have had sparks fly out over the top of the fire guard.
(not all in the same night of course!!)

Never had that much sparks with the non-smokeless stuff when I still could get it.

Tecnicially I'm living in Limerick County not Limerick City
but I dont remember how many miles/KM you need to be outside of the city to be allowed to burn ordinary coal.
But the Coal-Man wont deliver the good stuff.

(correction on my earlier post, 40KG bag was 19 Euros last weekend not 22 from the Co-op)
