I'm sick of one of my characters' names. It doesn't suit him and it sounds too much like another character.

He's a Londoner in his late twenties, middle-class but likes to project an image of streetwise hardman. Short in stature and an aggressive, sarcastic piece of work. He has been caleld Lee Sansom up to now.

Any suggestions? Nothing too outlandish but preferably not as boring as the above either.

Would the name Charles J. Haughey suit ?

I can think of two rather famous people called Terry Jones. Bad name for a character.

If it were a French enlightenment play, gladly.

Max and Jack are good-guy names, Tony and Harry are too middle of the road. None of the surnames really stands out.

Tintin and the Kung-Fu temple it is not.

Would that it were not taken. Alas...

Terry's not too bad actually, but with another surname.

Tim - simpering ponce of a name.

If you're happy with Terry here's some more surnames:
    Jameson,
    McKenzie, or my my favourite...
    Crowthorn

Aw I thought mine were great villain names :(

Maybe I should specify that we're not supposed to know instantly on meeting him that he's a homocidal maniac. That should gradually become apparent. So Hannibal Killington would be right out.

That could easily be a description of Johnny Rotten or Sid Vicious. Two infamous Londoners, who everyone thought were lunatics.

Why not name him Johnny or Sid :)
Can't really think of a second name. Trotter perhaps :D ?
    Johnny Trotter, Sid Trotter
References to the Sex Pistols and Only Fools & Horses. The two greatest things to come out of London!........(ok, that's very debatable!)

    Sid! Perfect. :)

    Trotter... maybe not.

Okey doke, no Trotter. How about other famous London family names. Sid Mitchell? Sid Kray?

    Sid Aston sounds good.

How about something like Sid Preston
    That's middle-classy.

Or maybe Sid Peters, that's innocuous.
    Or Si (simon) Thorn

    Eoin

    Sid Harman?

kind sounds like "hardman" but isnt very obvious... i think...ish... :D

I'm debating going back to Sansom as I think it kind of goes well with his new first name. Also 'Handsome' Sansom as an ironic nickname...

    Sid Heffer?

Not many of the names suggested sound plausable for your typical London hard nut. I agree that Lee is a bit soft, but Sansom is ok. How about John Sansom? Nobody ever questions the choice of Jason Bourne in the films, yet the name could be considered dull in another role.

    Reece Duggan
    Chester Haiden
    Finn Kingdom

All depends on how middle class and what London era it's set in.

    Alistair Somethin or
    maybe Alistor Somethin

Or vice versa have it as a surname

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,789 ✭✭✭slavetothegrind

    Leonard young, lenny
    Avery Roche
    Thomas Halpenny
    Harold Grainger

    good luck with it!;)

What about Marcus Sansom? Marcus is a middle-class name, and it also has a slightly slimy, disgusting quality (Marcus reminds me of mucus - no offence to anyone called Marcus!). He could also be called Mac, which has a hard edge?

What time is the story set in?

If it's 21st century, my name would be David 'Davey' Johnson.

I prefer Picka "the litter" Rooney :D

For the time being at least, he's going to be Sid Sansom. The last guy I knew called Marcus was possibly the most slimy, disgusting person I ever met, funnily enough.

Sid Sansom. It's a wee bit sibilant for my liking. Why Sansom, out of interest? Are you an Arsenal fan by any chance?

I'm never madly keen when a character has a fairly unusual surname that he or she shares with someone famous. If you wouldn't call him Sid Lampard, then I'd advise against calling him Sansom.

    How about: Sid Cotter?

No, but I think I may have been watching clips of Euro '88 around the time. Kenny Sansom doesn't feature very highly on a google serch for that surname though, that said, although I've never heard of any of the writers and actors that share the name.

    Simon Harknett
    David Trentham
    George Marks

Middle Class English you need a semi power name that can be shortened & isn't too highbrow....

Google old London Surnames and pull some inspiration from there...

    Max 'the blade' Hawkins

he could be named after a historical figure- so that later we find he's the very anthisis of the person or that the name is ironical

    eg Winston Churchill
    John Silver
    Charles Dickens
