    Just watched this film.

I thought it was superb. Don't know why it took me so long to get round to watching it. Wow just amazing. Different, well made, unpredictable & just thoroughly enjoyable from the first minute to the last.

Definitely the film of 2009 & not that other sci/fi film about 9ft tall smurfs dancing round a giant tree.

Mods: if theres a superthread for this film feel free to relocate this thread.

Giant Smurfs dancing around a tree and having sex with animals sums up avatar. It looked good that's about it.

District 9 was politically sensitive and a superb piece of work that came out of the left field. Great movie.

Im just genuinely blown away by this film. I think its because i wasn't expecting that much from it & then well what-d'ya-know im sitting there jaw on floor from about halfway through to the end.:D

Its been a while since ive watched a film where im thinking - hmm, whats going to happen next....???

I liked everything about it. Ive never seen anything like it.

Im well annoyed i didn't get to see it in the cinema.:(

Solid movie, CGI was pretty damn high end.

    True.

Its the sort of film that would have looked pretty lame if it had been made 10 years ago.

An exceptional movie. It was robbed for Best Movie at the Oscars (The Hurt Locker me hole) One wonders if it would have garnered more acclaim had it been set in the U.S. I loved that it wasn't though.

We were blessed with D9 and Moon in 2009. It's great to see true science fiction alive and well, on the small screen too with SG-U.

Visual effects aren't essential to great science fiction but they can help - D9 was bordering on photorealism in that department - so good you forget that they're effects (Which is the whole point at the end of the day)

A sequel looks to be at least 2/3 years off but I'd stake the house on Blomkamp delivering another fantastic cerebral spectacle if and when it happens. (I'd much rather it be a sequel than a prequel though)

Yup its most definitely my idea of a great modern sci fi movie unlike some of the recent all-looks-but-no-depth 'blockbusters' that have been flooding the scene in the last few years. One in particular that ive already mentioned.

I also agree with your opinion on why it didn't get best movie, typical.

D-9 is original. Thats what had me hooked till the end. Also its nice that they expanded upon the alien characters more than the humans. One little element was the subtle little interactions between the father & son 'prawns', i thought that was so refreshing suprisingly emotive?!
The little kid alien is an ugly little bugger but i couldn't help feeling sorry for the scamp.:D

    Great show. More please.

So you got it then to some degree?

So you got it then to some degree?

Some sheep people just want the typical hollywood ending.

The good guy gets the gal, the hero saves the day, everyone smiles & theres lots of cheering.

Films like Falling Down, contact & plenty more i can't recall including D-9 don't follow the same hum-drum formula. It tends to frighten the majority of people, hence why such films rarely do very well at the box office.

The ending of The Mist was such a **** you to Hollywood, Arlington Road deserves a mention too, i find movies that don't end happily really stick with me after they end and i really love that.

yeah but making movies that dont have a happy ending is just another formula itself, dont be fooled :D

    You'd love Leonard Abrahamson's Garage so?? :D:confused:

Yeah anything unique, original or different does it for me these days. Thats why i enjoyed D9.

So, just to get this right here, anyone who dislikes District 9 is a hollywood warped 'sheep' who only likes cliched and positive endings and is scared of anything original or unique?

I loathed both District 9 and Avatar btw. The treatment of Nigerians in the former was undeniably 'vile', while the partaking of Black South Africans in the apartheid of the Aliens was exceedingly insensitive. The latter was just awful in every single way.

Pretty stupid comment, he is as much entitled to not like this as you are to not like avatar.

Maybe, but it's a formula that isn't used very often so when it does it gives a little more kick.

First of all my response to the above mini-rant comment was light-hearted, if its taken seriously i'd be worried about such a fragile minded person.

Secondly, i like avatar but ive seen more in-depth plots in episodes of sponge bob square pants.

Thirdly, im sure he can speak for himself.

Firstly, lighthearted maybe, still stupid tbh.

Secondly, it's not that it's a bad story or a plot, it's just that it's been done before that is the problem.

Thirdly, doesn't matter if he can speak for himself, you made a sweeping generalisation that he was an avatar fan because he didn't like district 9.

I agree, you can also include the treatment of Germans as villains in Die Hard, I know for a fact there are some nice German people, they're not all terrorists.

Its a film, they needed some villians, was it playing to a stereotype of Nigerians? of course. As for the black South Africans not wanting the aliens around, wasnt that the point?

Look i don't really care what you think is a stupid comment. That means nothing to me.

Don't take things so seriously. ;)

Your talking about sweeping generalisations? Discribing something as pure garbage, disgusting, vile & offensive & then running away without any further development of such strong opinions is a pretty sweeping contribution from monkey. Thats not what discussion is about. Hence me taking the piss.

Wow, you liked neither films? Your a tough customer?!:D

Hey fair enough. At least your willing to expand upon your dislike of D9.

May i ask what sort of films rock your boat? Are you a fan of sci fi? Its not a loaded question by the way.

I thought it was brilliant too. When a film like this gets such a resoundingly positive response it is as much a condemnation of the status quo Hollywood has drilled into our now trained brains as it is a positive reflection of the film itself.

*HOLY CRAP IT DIDN'T FOLLOW A FORMULA! BEST FILM EVER!*

Wasn't that fond of Avatar either, different strokes ....

I guess District 9 had a good message to it,
good analogy with the way we really treat immigrants

but apart from that, ugh sorry not my cup`of tea
